Not sure if I will actually get from newegg as their shipping prices are the best but I am thinking of this rig.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wi...istNumber=3117906&WishListTitle=New+PC"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=3117906&WishListTitle=New+PC">https://secure.newegg.com/NewVers.........r=3117906&WishListTitle=New+PC</a></a>

I will be using my Antec Smartpower 450.

Thanks and all input is greatly appreciated!

Update:
Hey guys, I don't want to spend much on a kickass cpu until dual core comes down and I should be able to use my same mobo at that time.

I will at that time buy better memory at 2 gigs.

I ordered an opteron 146 for $150 OEM.

Ordered x1900xt, mem, case from newegg on this list and their stacking of all shipping charges is a joke so I may order somewhere else.

Newegg kept stacking on the shipping charges and wanted to add like $16 for arctic silver and 3 80mm fans. I need to find a better place because that is a joke.

What other good companies are out there for good prices on shipping?

Thanks, I can't wait to order and get it all!

Less expensive Mobo, hard drive, and then use that money to get a 7900gt/x1800xt.

What monitor will use be using it with? (crt/lcd and resolution)

If it's a general purpose machine, it looks well rounded for the price. If it's dedicated to gaming, you could get away with a smaller HD, and slightly better video card.

I use the pc for dvd video, mp3 & some work stuff too. I have a 19" CRT and a dvd-r drive already, xp pro.

Slightly better vid card? whats slightly better for not too much cash, this one is like $170 after rebate, 7900 would be over 100 more I think.

Thanks!!

Not sure! Maybe a 7800GT, like an eVGA with a copper cooler. I don't know the price. I've got an old 7800GT, and it's nice, but it could always be better. Video's king with games.

I'd say go for the X2-3800+. Games are shifting towards being SMP-aware and multithreaded. You won't want to be caught without a dual-core CPU a year from now.

If anything he should get a better graphics card because it'll immediately provide a boost in framerates. In 1 year from now as you say, when dual core does become important, he can pick 4600+ for the price of 3800+ instead.

Seagage 300gb - $99 - save $30
Epox Board - $79 or something along these lines - save $27
Case - $19.99 - not the prettiest but it has a 120mm fan on the back and clean layout inside - savings $30
Total savings = $87

X1800XT - $269

so need to add $3 for X1800XT. Performance will go up at least 50%.

I'd go with something like this, although i'd stick with the orriginal case and just go overbudget. Whatever you do ditch the motherboard for a non SLI one. Don't worry about dual core, it's out of your budget anyway.

yea i'd go with the x1800xt also. drop to a cheaper non sli mb like a8n5x. def cheaper hard drive as u can upgrade that later on if u really need it. or go PATA.

Thanks much for the input guys!!!

I feel all my pics are good but you are right about cheaper mobo as I will not use SLI. I will save cash on that and also look at the X1800XT.

50% better performance than the 7600GT? wow, is that really for real?

LIke you said right now dual core isn't worth the extra cash for me so I will steer clear and just get this single core.

Especially about cheaper cases that are still nice and good cooling.

thanks!

keep shooting feedback at me guys.

Thanks for the info russian, the 1800xt looks like it will be worth my update to the system. I hope to finalize this and order this week.

Also if I setup raid is it really a performance booster.

And if I got the a8n5x it could still overclock the cpu and vid card fine if I wanted to try right?

I have updated my newegg wish list with some new specs, thanks.

Also removed the hdd as I'm not sure if I will go Raid or use one of my 80 or 120 gig 7200rpm drives.

I will have to look in to the performance gains.

HD performance is rather irrelevant once the game has loaded, a faster HD makes a difference in BF2 because you're not waiting half an hour longer than everyone else to load the map, and in stuff like Civ4 becasue it's faster to load saved games etc. But once the map is loaded the HD is pretty irrelevant. (Assuming you have enough RAM).

If you can get 2GB of RAM then that's a very good upgrade, if not don't worry too much.

If you are tuning for video editing, the video card works for some. Depends on the editing package. If you plan on getting After Effects, Avid Xpress, or some other editing components, a Quadro card might be in order. If it is a consumer editor (under $150), the choice is good. If it is Pinnacle Studio, the choice is ideal.

Dual core/processor is gooooooddddd. There are some functions in rendering and some editors that benefit from a dual core. Get a 3800+ for the price. BUT, dual core does not mean TWICE as fast. Best is 20-30% and sometimes a little slower.

A primer on tested configurations with video editors. I run Avid Liquid.

i see 2 x1800xt's on that list with an nforce sli motherboard.

you cant crossfire on a SLI board...unless you get the illegal patch...

Big problem now!!

I had my SL450 Antec Smartpower but the main power doesn't fit.(not enough pins)
I suppose now I need a new power supply with the extra main pins?

damn, what's a good one guys? I guess I'll need to stop at crapusa tomorrow and pay too much.

thanks!
