Back before PCI-Ex 2.0 was out, I heard it was to be backwards and forward compatible with 1.0. But I also heard there were some video cards where that wasn't true now. I have a Nforce 4 Ultra motherboard so it has a x16 slot. I just searched around and heard about two different versions of 1.0 (1.0a and 1.1)? And finally I read several times that a PCI-Ex 2.0 card will work, but it will "run at 1.0 speeds". I'm not sure what that means other than I know that the max bandwidth of 1.0 is something ridiculous like 8 Gbps which seems like is way higher than any card would currently require.

I'm thinking about getting a 4870 but I want to make sure it will work and to its full potential.
 
Yes it will work. I don't know the performance difference but it will work fine. I'm using a GTX260 on a PCIe 1.0 (P5B deluxe) as we speak.
 
I thought it was PCI-E 1.1 and not 1.0.

How could you tell if it was 1.1 or 1.0 then, assuming my statement is correct.
 
Great. A 4870 is gonna be haus as hell. I think I'll go with the Powercolor (mentioned in Hot Deals), or maybe the Visiontek since for about $15-20 more I would get Grid. A GTX 260 is actually only a tad more, and some reviews show it almost always better than the 4870, but AT's own reviews show the opposite (4870 is faster usually). I guess in that case it is dumb to argue and that they both have similar and good performance for the money.
