Get the Opertron CPU (Dual core one)
Get a good mb with good reviews on Newegg. If you styick to the name brands you should be fine
Get 1 or 2 gigs of value ram your choice
I'd get a large HD. I wouldn't go raptor. Less bang for buck and way less storage.
Nec 3540a DVD burner
Seasonic 430 Watt PSU for quiet or Antec Neopower CPU for modular cabling.
Case your choice but I would personally get something Antec
If you play games get a Evga 7800 GT card

You may see my updated choice above

also, you may want to get a pata hdd depending on driver support for sata with linux, not sure how good it is. there is basically no performance gain over pata with sata and the only difference is small cables.

as far a scsi, again make sure your distro had drivers for whatever scsi card you would get, but pata is pretty sure to be in most of the distros.
