i was planning on buying in January when they are trying to clean out their stock, but also when it's closer to when i will need it, February.

i'm majoring in CS, so compiling will be there, but i want to learn the game development as well. I plan on focusing a good portion of my masters in game design (i'm doing combined BS/MS )

Yeah, IBM is not one to change their looks too often which is unfortunate. :(

You are not going to find many systems that are cheaper than Dell. That is one of the main reasons they went from #2 to #1 computer supplier.

If you will be doing Linux work on your box, have you considered the Athlon 64 system that AnandTech recently reviewed? By the time the new CPU's are released, the Athlon 64 technology will also be further along and you should be able to run a 64-bit OS (Linux or Windows) by then as well.

Dell seems to be the winner... I went with Dell because a friend's old Inspiron 7500 really impressed me. I ended up going with the Inspiron 600m (fell within my budget), but I would have wanted to go for the Inspiron 8600... especially now that they offer it with the ATI Radeon 9600 128MB.

I am happy with Dell as the notebook feels great and does what I want it to do... plus Dell has a lot of "free" add ons for notebook buyers... I got the DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW added on for no extra cost, and a 64MB ATI Radeon upgrade, as well as only having to throw in $75 for Windows XP Professional, instead of the $150 they origianlly wanted. Oh, and one last thing, the person I spoke with threw in a complete 1 year total protection plan, regardless of what happens to my notebook it will either be replaced or fixed...

For what Dell is offering, and for the price, Dell really impressed me.

Yeah, remember that the sales representatives you deal with really want you to buy a notebook so they can get their commision! Whatever they offer you as a "final" price, tell them that you would like a better deal... within reason.

I bought a topped out Dell 8600 with a 1.7GHz, 60GB 7200RPM HDD, 128MB Radeon Pro Turbo, WUXGA screen, Bluetooth, 802.11a/b/g, 3 YR Onsite+CC warranty, 4X DVR+R/+RW, and 90W power supply. I skimped on RAM because Dell rips you off, so I got the system with 256MB RAM, soon to be upgraded to 1GB RAM. 1GB RAM from Dell costs $550.00, while 1GB RAM from Crucial costs about $260.00. These are the prices for the 2 stick solutions, btw. In total, my system came out to about $2,370.00 after the $169.00 MIR. Now I just need to upgrade the RAM to 1GB RAM and I'm set to go. You should get your system from the Small Business division because they have some amazing deals going on all the time.

I got 15% off, 3% off, $169.00 MIR, and a free 4X DVD+R/+RW ($150.00 value). I saved about $830.00. 15% off was from a coupon. 3% off was from using a Dell Small Business account to pay for this. $169.00 MIR was from buying the 3 Yr Onsite with CC with CC warranty. Free 4X DVD+R/+RW was just a promotion that Dell had going on.

I bought my system on 12/11/03, btw.

Hope this helps you.
