Playstation on LCD

Hey guys,
First of all I have a Dell 2407WFP-HC monitor which I use for my PC screen. I tried attaching my Playstation 2 to the monitor through the composite input (the red/yellow/white wires thing). However, the images are blurry and not as sharp as they were on my TV screen. Is there any way to fix this?
Also, Im planning on buying a Playstation3. Yet, I would be only willing to buy it if I got the crisp and beautiful graphics I am paying for. Would playstation3 be able to play its blu-ray DVDs as clear as they should be on my screen?

Try using component cables.

And, yes, a PS3 would fix this problem, as it does a fairly good job of upscaling PS2 games. Just use an HDMI to DVI cable to hook it up, not component.

I bet what is happening is that your LCD monitor is upscaling the PS2 to its native 1920x1200 (just a guess on the resolution number, typical for 24" wide screens). Most of the DVDs and Playstation 2 games are encoded to output 480i or 480p in the newer titles. That would be a 720x480 for DVDs and probably a 4:3 aspect ratio 640x480 for the PS2 games.

PS3 games are natively going to be 720p or 1080p encoded. So they're upscaling to the monitor native shouldn't be noticeable. Like erwos said, the PS3 does a good job in upscaling the PS2 games through a HDMI connection, though not as good as outputting a plane 720p or higher signal.

End result, the PS2 (console) will look that way on a 1920x1200 display no matter the connection. The PS3 (games) will look quite a lot better compared to the PS2 (games) using either console to play them.

Would there be a difference in the quality when using the DVI-D cable instead of the HDMI cable to connect to my monitor? My monitor only has a DVI input.

Not exactly sure. Hardest part would be to find some form of PS3 DVI-D cable that plugs into the multi A/V connector on the PS3. I remember the PS2 had a monitor (15 pin D sub) output for using the PS2 has a Linux box. That was an official Sony accessory.

I use HDMI on my LCD tv (virtually a monitor with an actual 15 pin D sub input), so I wouldn't know. But in theory, I cannot see why there would be a difference.

I suggest trying to find someone that is using a connection from their PS3 like you want to try. Otherwise you might wind up needing to purchase some more expensive items.

Okay, so the only problem i may have is finding a cable connecting the ps3 to a dvi input... I was also wondering, does my monitor (dell 2407wfp-hc) have full hd support? as i understand, i would need a full hd display to get the best possible graphics from the ps3...

On Cnet (first google return I trust) it says your Dell 2407WFP has a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 at 60 Hz. The maximum resolution that Blu-Ray and PS3 games have are 1080p. That is 1920x1080 at 60 Hz.

You might have some letter boxing (blank spaces on the top and bottom) from your over abundance of screen space or it might stretch the image up to 1920x1200 from the 1920x1080 input. Depends on what your Dell monitor does or if there are options you can configure this.

Might want to read your user's manual or doing some google searching for your monitor with keywords of "ps3 input" or "hd support" or something along those terms to find out how extensive your monitor allows for configuring.

PS3 Upscaling of PS2 games is mediocre imo. The ps2 will do a much better job, trust me. Using component cables with ur PS2 will give u the best effect.

PS3 will work best using hdmi to dvi-d. This is easy since they're really the same thing.

Essentially, this is what I'm saying: Will connecting a Playstation 3 to my Dell 2407WFP-HC monitor result in any sort of loss of quality when compared to a TV that supports "Full HD"?

No because the monitor supports full HD.

The only problem that mgiht arise is if the monitor wont allow you to place black bars on top and bottom when running 1080p/720p and it just fills

Oh that should not be a problem. This monitor has the following choices for Wide Mode: 1:1, Aspect, or Fill. That should fix the problem.

Last few questions.
In your personal opinion would using a 24" screen to view movies and games in Full HD too small to appreciate the actual clarity?
and would any of you suggest that plasmas are better than LCD for viewing PS3 games and BD movies?

No, you just have sit closer to it than if you had a larger screen.

I hear plasmas have a tendency to "burn in" images. If you avoid this problem, then equally spec'ed plasma and an equally spec'ed LCD will/should display a given source equally.

If you set all the image configurations (in the monitor on screen display menus) for each input the same, then yes.

There are only HD trailers, which I think are HD DVD trailers, right?

You're confusing 2 different things. HD is a video format (720p, 1080i, 1080p etc)

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are just storage mechanisms. When you download something to your PS3 or 360 it cannot be a Blu-Ray movie or an HD-DVD movie, it is now a downloaded HD movie, and the quality is likely to be identical to either storage mechanism. Also when it comes to downloads, there is really no such thing as a Blu-Ray trailer or an HD-DVD trailer, just HD and SD trailers

Oh, in that case, I downloaded a 300 HD trailer at 1080p and it looked great. However, I did notice that the dark scenes weren't that great. The colors seemed a little greyed and the contrast was not as sharp. Would anybody know how to enhance the image?
I would know the true quality of games and movies that a PS3 can output on my screen..
