Finally! Personally, I think he should commit seppuku for all his miserable failings. Maybe SONY can begin the long road to recovery now.

Enderle said the biggest of those mistakes--the pricey inclusion of the Blu-ray player in the PS3--may well have been forced on Kutaragi by others at Sony.
Bummer.

Bummer.

Not bummer, it's par for the course.

Force proprietary stuff on consumers. Sony is in it's death throws and I for one am happy to see them die. FINALLY.

If not for him, we wouldn't have had the PS 1 & 2. Great consoles.

they don't force things on anyone.. as its your choice whether or not to purchase their products, but they do make their products in a very proprietary fashion, trying to obtain the upper hand on market.. but every time they try, they fail miserably... take the Sony Audio CD, MiniDisc Player, BlueRay, Betamax for examples.

I completely agree. He should be remembered for all the good things.

But the culture and force for blue-ray lead a leader to do what he didn't want to do. That will crush any true leader.

if he really wanted to, he could have left blue-ray out.

I don't think so. I don't know the history however but I have seen a TON of high level execs pushed out and their hand forced.

I've been in corporate world for far too long. With enough pressure from 3-4 fronts your decision will be made for you.

Uh, aren't all of those formats still alive and being used?

By who? If they were in widespread use they would not be considered utter failures. RIP.

MiniDisc was actually pretty popular.. especially for the live recordings crowd. And in the UK and Japan I think. Still, not widespread, and a failure in my mind (and I liked MD's). Blu-Ray is still far too early to tell. And the only reason memory stick is alive is because sony can leverage the brand name quite well, like it or not. And it may be how blu-ray stays alive/succeeds. Don't get me wrong, I want to see it flop the most, but realistically, at the current pace, it'll just turn out like DVD+/-R

I really hope it simply becomes an open standard whatever the new format is, to hell with sony or any other company holding the reigns.

Thats a problem how? They're a business, they take decisions and risks to try to make a profit. In that same way, aren't the other companies evil too with their "proprietary" hd-dvd and VHS?

They fail and take the financial losses, wtf does that bother you.

The rootkits are another matter.

Not at all. Dead technology.

Sony does real good at pushing the envelope, where they fail is forcing you to use their proprietary formats.

1) After CDs, they pushed mini-disk in the early 90s. FAIL.
2) Somewhere along the same lines they pushed mini-8. FAIL.
3) Mini-disc = FAIL
4) Whatever the hell watching videos on a PSP. FAIL.
5) These are just a few examples, I'm sure there are more.

I've been a HUGE audio/video guy for some 20 years now. There is an ongoing theme to sony's approach. They will not give that up at all. They will rely upon their name and marketing oh so similar to BOSE.

FULL DISCLOSURE:
I own a high end SACD player 777es. I own PS1/2. My next major A/V purchase will be from SONY. I own the next step down from sony's DLSR. I pick and choose and in many ways sony does still reign supreme - but just a few. It's branding is losing and it's not what it once was.

Kutaragi sees the writing on the walls.

They're were the hands-down console leaders for the last two generations, and now they're getting b1tchslapped by Nintendo in the console and handheld front.

it's starting to turn around. Prices will be coming down this year and the quality of their products has been improving.

i still don't agree about forcing their formats on you though. If you bought a sony device and at the same time they had a format vying to be the sole format, then you should expect the format to be in that device.

memory stick hasn't failed, its still used quite a lot in certain devices. There are too many different types of memory cards. That's a tough market actually.

betamax.. well can you blame sony for trying to make a format? VHS was just as forced depending on what brand machine you bought. Same with all the other techs. Sony is of course going to use its proprietary tech in its devices. Having a format that everyone licenses is money. Toshiba wants the same thing for HD-DVD.

I'll support Sony even though they have had a few shortcomings in the past decade and a half. But the new president seems pretty hell bent about restoring Sony to its former glory.

Well we can agree to disagree to agree. ;)

I read a LOT of consumer electronics stuff and their inner workings as well as using my own eyes and ears. I'm no brand whore by any means.

I HOPE sony pulls it around and uses their innovation to drive competitors. Panasonic/samsung are ready for the takeover, but even those have good and bad apples. I am loyal to no brand when it comes to Audio/Video.
