This 9 minute video is better than the entire Microsoft stream they had last week or whenever to show off the XBXSX.

All I can say is wow. This looks incredible and it's actually real time and interactive so there are no bullshots like I'm guessing the Bright Memory game was in the MS stream.

Still kind of bullshotty because it'll be many years before you would see that level of detail in a game, especially the stuff at the end.

Looks nice, but I am reading it is only 1440/30 and no ray tracing?

Also, claiming this is gameplay is a stretch, it is a tech demo.

We are still a generation away from a true 4k all the time console. Remakes and Madden will look great at least.

Define "ray tracing", what are you missing, hovering shiny chrome toruses spinning around in a gimmicky way perhaps? :p Demo has fully interactive lighting that interacts with geometry in realtime, including secondary bounces (perhaps several bounces even I'm not sure), who cares if it's accomplished with raytracing or not? Everything looks fabulous regardless.

They claim it is playable, so there's gameplay. There's no NPC characters, but the CPU is 8 ryzen cores running at 3.5+ GHz, so there should be plenty of headroom there for stuff like that.

Hardware ray tracing, just pointing out some limitations based on the specs of the new consoles. /shrug The water looks like s* (~4:14), hopefully they can improve on that.

Hardware ray tracing
Haha yes, but what do you want accomplished with the hardware ray tracing? It's not a magic wand you just wave at a scene and bam, you have the perfect image! :p

And regarding your opinion of the water, this is just a demonstration of the capabilities of the engine. It doesn't mean all water is forever cursed with UE5 (or PS5 either for that matter); it was an artistic choice to make the water look that way, and time and money was likely a factor seeing as this is apparently not going to be a title that goes on sale, ever. Quite likely the interactive waves were deliberately exaggerated to show off how the game engine can handle interactive water.

The consoles provide hardware raytracing, they didn't use it, presumably because it would impact performance, which implies that this feature of the new consoles is not that useful.

The water looks like absolute garbage to me, it is a jarring difference to the rest of the demo.

1440p resolution at 30FPS is pretty disappointing, I would prefer to see what they can do at 60FPS at least.

I don't think it's a usefulness thing, it's more that it'looks like it's going to be a long time before developers (or at least devs that would use UE) move on from the current gen.

That's an assumption for which there is no evidence. It's just something you wrote up, it has no factual basis.

Okay! You're entitled to your opinion (I'm not a superfan of the water either mind you.) Still doesn't mean anything more than they made the water look that way though.

From what I've read the demo uses dynamic resolution, and 1440P is only at certain points of the demo. 30fps for an action adventure game is reasonable, and lets the demo makers show off meatier effects, thus giving more of an impact. If the demo had been modeled after a driving game or such, 60FPS might have been a more fitting target.
