The 40 gig model for 399 got me itching to buy the ps3. Tack on the 100 dollar credit using sony card plus no interesting for 12 months at sony style stores its a bargain. Yes, I can afford to pay it off all at once. For those who might believe I'm in financial crunch. But why should I. I'd rather just put the same amount in a savings account, make minimums then pay whatever is left before the final month.

Anyhow...so besides the obvious playing games and BR movies what else I can do on the ps3.

I know the obvious features that are advertised. I'm more interested in the things that aren't exactly advertised. like is it possible to put movies onto the hard drive. Assuming I use a codec that ps3 understands. stuff like that.

Yes to movies, also music and photo slideshows. At least photos can also be played from a USB stick or HD instead of the internal drive.

Streaming.

Install linux (no hacking needed, Sony supports it).

I didn't know it fully supported Linux. You mean that you can just install Ubuntu or something on to the hard drive and have the PS3 turn into a fully fledged computer? Does Linux have access to the GPU so you can play Linux supported games on it?

That's a pretty good deal if you can get a whole computer for that cheap.

There is no GPU access. I believe you need one built for the PS3 like Yellow Dog. From what a friend told me, one of the best reasons to do this is to rip Blu-Ray discs.

No acess to the GPU, Yellow Dog Linux PS3 is made specifically for the Cell though. You can run any version of linux you want.

You can do alot with it actually.

If your past posts are any indication, you are one of the biggest fanboys.

The PS3 also works as a heater.

So true..

I suppose I would rather have the heat removed efficiently, rather than stay in the console, though.

It's also a good paperweight. I'm sure Sony will have you believe it also does your dishes and mows your lawn too. It can also control your wife's PMS via it's built-in WiFi, a huge advantage over the 360.

unless its a "writable" blu ray drive, it wont rip Blue Ray discs....any links to prove that?

And install linux is good, but i used it a lot of movies before i moved my compy to the same room. you can use a thumbdrive to bring movies of the supported formats to the ps3 to play them. 60gb is plenty of room to work with for this

FYI, in CD / DVD / other disc parlance, "rip" = extract the data to HD, "burn" = create a playable disc.

How pathetic. A person asks a simple question, and the trolling comes flooding in.
