playstation 3 powers on by itself

My Playstation 3 80GB turns on by itself. At first I thought that someone was pressing buttons on the remote but I have since taken the remote and placed it up high on a shelf. And the controllers are up high too. It comes on at anytime. It has to do with the new firmware, I flashed it then this started happening, I posted to playstation.com but they all laugh at me.
Does anyone know what is going on and how I fix it?
 
Putting the controllers up high won't do anything. They can work through walls, because they are bluetooth devices. I've taken mine in my basement & it's still controls the PS3. That would be roughly 40 feet away from the PS3. Is your shelf higher than that?😀

I think a better test for you would be to set the controllers to turn off after 10 minutes of non use, then manually turn off the PS3 when you see the red lights on the controllers go off. I'm betting you have a defective controller.
 
The controllers may still work up high, but what I was trying to do was to make shure that no one was messing with them.
What I was getting at is that no one is pressing any buttons,the controllers are ok they have been removed to the other end of the house.

Ok, but they may still work, even if you moved them to the other side of your home. Did you try resetting both controllers? If you did that, they would no longer be paired to your PS3.
 
It's the BBoL error *. PS3s are so reliable that you can't make them stop working even when you want them to.

That is a damned odd problem. I mean, theoretically, some other device in the 2.4ghz spectrum that Bluetooth operates in could be doing it... but it seems mindblowingly unlikely. Maybe one of your controllers is faulty? Or, hey, maybe the PS3 needs repair.

One other idea: turn remote play off if you somehow have it on. *shrugs*
 
I'm with you erwos. That's why I sugested that he reset both controllers, so they wouldn't be paired with the PS3. He should then leave things alone for a couple of days, to see if the problem is still there. If it goes away, then he knows it's one of the controllers.
 
Are you using the most current PS3 firmware?

I know if you're using the most current firmware, the user cannot upgrade from the XMB. However, will the PS3 perform an 'update' to the same firmware from an external device such as a USB thumdrive?

no it isn't problem solved,I want it to be soft off untill I insert a disc.I don't want to have to flip the switch in the back every time I want to play a movie

And it is the latest firmware that has caused this unit to behave this way,this was not happening before the 2.60 firmware
 
You know the PS3 uses a ton of power drawing from the wall on idle, you honestly should be turning the switch off anyway to lower your cost-of-ownership.
 
Of course if you are making a ton of money (and does not live in California or New York--cost of living) then it goes without saying the power savings won't matter to you.

I have to agree. Sure it might sound unlikely, but why take the risk when the consequence of causing the extinction of humanity is so high? At the very least, keep it disconnected from the internet.
 
The only thing that really could be defective on the controller is the PS3 button, right? no other button or movement will turn the unit on.. but on the other hand, if the button was stuck, it would be cutting into games and movies.
