PlayStation 3 costs $800, sez Merrill Lynch mob

If there are some people out there right now who are in the know when it comes to what the hell is going on -- we mean really going on -- with Sony, it's those investment firms. But even barring their research analysts getting all kinds of privvy information from direct executive input or connections on the supply side, it's kind of funny when one of these investment firms lets loose some juicy gossip. Like that Sony's albatross PlayStation 3 is going to cost them $800 per unit at launch (they list $900, but apparently Lynch financial analysts can't add their own totals). $800 per unit? Doesn't sound unreasonable considering what Sony's trying to get under cram under the hood of this thing; Lynch calls it an "expensive and difficult-to-manufacture product" because of the Cell processor and Blu-ray drive, which account for the lion's share of the backend parts costs (see above). Granted, most of this analysis comes off as estimation and prediction, but we'd like to make a prediction of our own: the PS3? She's like Kutaragi's Spruce Goose. Oh she'll fly alright, but at what cost?

P.S. It's worth a reminder that game companies always sell these things at a loss at launch, so we shouldn't have to worry too much about ponying up about a grand for a PS3. Eh, maybe only six or seven hundred.

$600-$700 + tax is still WAY too much for a console.

Come down to the $400-$500 price point, then we're talking.

I wish Microsoft and Sony would quit trying to make their console do everything under the sun. Just play the *&*% game. That way the prices would be a little more realistic. $150 - $200.

So... like Nintendo are doing?

I wouldn't buy one for $80, let alone $800. Console games just can't touch PC games.

you can't touch any PC games either until you fork over the money to buy a $300 video card plus a fast CPU, expensive mobo, and some ram.

My 9200 plays all good PC games fine. Yeah, it probably wouldn't play Quake IV or Doom 3, but who cares if the gameplay sucks?

Actually, a $120-$150 video card does fine. You could probably build a whole system to play any game for $800.

That price is also way outrageous. I don't even think it's true. If it is, my not so well off friend is going to be pwned when he tries to go buy one. 🙁

yeah i guess minsweeper is entertaining enough. it is for me.

Just stay generation behind and pick up older proven games for cheap and let the early adopters pay for the R&D. Win-win for all.

Far Cry runs great. UT2004 could be a bit smoother but a good videocard for it shouldn't be much more than $200.

I think you guys are missing the point. That is what it will cost Sony to make them. They will sell it to the consumer for much less.

They are not going to take a $300 hit on each console. Hell, if it is actually $900, there is no way in hell they're taking a $400 hit on each console.

And that's not even including a hard drive, which would add another $100 to the cost.

Hell, MS is only taking a $125 hit on the Xbox 360 Premium systems.

Who says you have to play the latest Madden. 😉

I just ordered preowned Madden 2004 for PS2 for $3.14 shipped. 🙂 It should be nice change of pace from NFL2k3 I've been playing on my Gamecube.

Very few will buy an $800 console, me included.

if it does enough to displace my PC i would probably sell my rig, im getting tired of the PC now and i dont really know what to do.

i have a killer rig, but not the time to play on it, and i dunno wether to get a 24inch + WS monitor for it in the summer becuase if i still wanna play games im gonna be upgrading my GPU frequently.

i really did contemplate selling up and buying a Core DUO laptop and jus calling it a day with PC gaming.......its jus gotten boring and unimaginative.

if the PS3 can do AIM, Word, Excel, internet, email, cad, keyboard, mouse, attach to a TFT, DVD, music, store and play DIVX by the bucket load, MATLAB, photoshop

then id buy it.....im guessing it wont do all those things ,and if it does sony will be expecting body parts in exchange. guess im stuck.

I'll wait for someone on-line to make some sort of PS3 emulator. That way I can buy the games without blowing tons of cash on an $800 system.

Yea, just like there's already an awesome PS2 and Xbox emulator, right?
