Hi
A short while ago I bought a AIWA - XD-DB370 dvd player and my wife loves to play video games. We decided to change the dvd player to PS2 .However I'm sure about the quality of the dvd player of PS2.
Is that any good ?
Can we use it as a primary dvd player ?
Or do we have to keep this dvd player and also buy seperate game console ?
My 30 day retuen policy will be over tuesday .Please respond today!!!!!
Thanks.

I read that quality was not the best but that it was acceptable. The problem is in the controls, they are horrible(game controller is not a good remote control) but I would get the ps2 because it will be good enough for dvd's and act as a decent console(the design choices made on it baffles me it's the most ineficient design i could imagine 16 pipelines with 1 texel each?? come on)

ps2 dvd playback is good, much better than VCR but not as good as dedicated mid range dvd player, definitely not as good as high end dvd player.
btw, u can get a dvd remote for ur ps2, u dont have to use the game controllers.

Dont get the madcat controller. The first ones were mislabeled, they don't respond very well, and they are just ugly. There are several other brands which look better and are labeled correctly. I've been using my psx2 as a DVD player since it came out. It is definitely better than vhs and quite good if you use the svhs conecction.

Dvd on the PS2 is good. If fact it's better than many low end DVD players.

DVD disc quality varies GREATLY - some movies are very sharp and focussed - others are no better than VHS at times even on a dedicated DVD player - lets be honest even VHS tape quality varies!

I was considering the same thing a year ago - however in the end I just plumped for a DVD player and upgraded the PC - hehe :)

True, but we are talking about the players not the disc. Whem I play Xmen in the PS2 using s video, it plays better than the pos sharp dvd player that I got my girl last xmas. The PS2 controls are suck, but they do the job.

R U connection the pos sharp DVD in the same manner - or just with co-ax?
does the sharp have better image quality for other films or is it always lesser quality?

I actually started with the sharp connected through the component video inputs, and the PS2 going into the front with the normal rca inputs. Here the sharp wins, but not by much. However, when I connect the PS2 to S-video, the picture really inproved. The colors were sharper and deeper, IMO on par with the sharp. When I connected the sharp with S video it sucked. There was such a change that I thought I bent pins or something. The picture looked blurry, the colors were dull, it was that bad. The difference between it & the PS2 was huge. That's why I feel the PS/2 is better.

The PS2 is a great idea - unfortunately I had become so addicted to CS and the PS2 was so expensive, I just got a DVD player (Samsung 909K) that was less than half price, upgraded to a GF256 and still had money leftover :)

I'm sure when the PS2 prices drop it will be even more attractive ;)

I don't expect to see a drop in the PS/2 until the Xbox arrives. I'll admit this though, so far the PS2 has been a letdown. Up to now I've only gotten 2 games for it, John Madden, & Tekken Tag.
There just hasn't been anything else worth getting so far. I plan on getting the new Star Wars game though, and GT3.

I'm a big FPS fan - so consoles are not really up to that task control wise yet - I'd love to be able to play CS on my 30" TV but I'm stuck with my 19" monitor ;)

The PS was a huge hit here in Hong Kong - but that was mainly due to the availability of pirate games - I don't see that happening with the PS2 - and hence it is not (as far as I can see) so popular.

I've had two different Aiwa bookshelf type stereo systems & will never buy another one. Junk.

Don't know about their dvd players.

buddy of mine has ps2, used dvd player frequently (quality is really good) but apparently it is eating away at the life of the lazer and game play is starting to get choppy already, something to consider. somewhere there is an article about certain problems using the dvd player, dont have any clue where though, might want to check it out just my .02
