Playstation 2 Outsells both Xbox and Gamecube

Apperently the PS2 is going strong.

Edit (from my lower post):

<< Sony sold 962,000 PlayStation 2 consoles between Nov. 11 and Dec. 8, according to CSFB estimates based on figures compiled by research firm NPDFunworld. Microsoft, which launched Xbox on Nov. 15, sold 934,000 consoles. The GameCube, introduced Nov. 18, sold 602,000. >>

From the LA Times article.

Should have posted that up top.
Actually the PS2 has a 4 day advantage in these numbers. Didn't notice that before.

XBox and PS2 are pretty damn close as is...

That's 28day run for the PS2, or ~34,357/day
And a 24day run for the XBox, or ~38,917/day

Perhaps PS2 isn't in the lead after all.
Should have posted that up here to begin with.

Haha, now the XBox (and GC) fans hate me for this thread, and now the PS2 fans hate me for pointing out the day by day numbers 😀

Well, for the record I intend on getting a PS2 for GTA3, GT3, FFX, Devil May Cry, and so on and so forth.
But I'm not really in any camp, I was just looking for numbers. And there they are. Make of them what you will.

<< It's called "supply." >>

<sarcasm> Wow, we have an economist in the house </sarcasm>

There are lots of reasons why the PS2 did. I was just pointing out that it did, for those who were interested in the sales figures. The first analysis of said figures is up.

I recall some people a few days ago looking for the relative amounts.

No, it's called "demand", ie, there is a lack of it for Xbox and GC. If you want an Xbox or GC you can buy one.

<< It's called "supply." >>

Agreed. You can always find stacks of PS2s all over, but you have to be at the right place at the right time to find a GC and especially an X-Box.

Some posters at slashdot also pointed out that Nintendo's leading retailer, Wal-Mart, isn't included in these surveys. Hmm, any truth to this?

And I can't stand \. You think it's hard keeping up with some threads here...well, over there, an average topic gains posts at the rate of about 10 per minute! Their rating system is supposed to help, but I'm not fond of it.

yeah but if you really want one, you can find an xbox or gamecube, however people would rather have a ps2, and it has little to do with whats stacked around

<< Agreed. You can always find stacks of PS2s all over, but you have to be at the right place at the right time to find a GC and especially an X-Box. >>

While this is true, you can't leave out the demand portion.

High Supply + Low Demand = Falling Price.

Sony dictates the price of PS2 true, but if Toys 'R' Us had 1 million PS2s in their backroom, that they paid $250US each for, they would try to sell them for $300 to maximize their profits....however, with 1 million PS2s in stock, that's 250 million US dollars they've paid.

If they can't sell them for $300/each, they would put them "on sale" for $275 for example. This would lower their net profit to 25 mil, from 50. But it's better than a loss of 250 mil.

Even if they had to drop it to $225 each, that's a loss of 25mil, but better than a loss of 250 mil.

This is an extreme case assuming they sell 0.

This is just an example, and an exaggerated one at that. But High Supply != High Sales.

If you had 1 million PS2s per store, at $1000US a piece, you would sell scarce few.

There is more to "the equation" than supply.

But really, I didn't mean to point out the economics of it, just that I noticed a few days ago people wondering at the sales amounts...and LA Times seems to have the first article I've seen.
I didn't mean to say nah-nah PS2 rules, or anything of the sort. This is just an observation.

Edit: Sorry about the /. site, there is a link to the LA Times article there, which is what you should really look at.

<< It's called "supply." >>

or it could just be the fact that FFX was released... the fact they have some kick ass games out and coming out helps alot.

quote off the site:

<< I'm an hour into FFX and don't foresee turning my PS2 off much this week. Can't talk now. Must see Lord of the Rings, and then play more FFX. Is this a great time to be alive, or what? >>

Not in my area.

A good reason for the PS2 selling more is the many quality games already out for the system. But sales don't mean much to me, I'm still getting my Cube next Tues😉

Yes, however you may have noticed that Walmart has really been pushing the PS2 in all
of their marketing. Also, every Walmart I visited in my area while searching for cheap DC
games were stocked to the gills with X-Boxs and Gamecubes... as was just about every
other videogame retailer in the area.

<< "give the xbox time....just give it some time...."

Hate to break it to ya, but the xbox is gonna fail!!!! 😉
>>

And the N64 was supposed to easily handle the PS1. Oops....

umm no. its already sold over a million consoles and has only been out for a month. It already has proven its going to be succesful

even though this is just an example, retailers never make a profit off of console systems. They buy em for $300 and sell them for $300. They buy em for a $100, sell em for a $100. it's the games that make profits for stores.

Exactly, it has sold more units per day than the PS2 and Gamecube in that time period. I would definately call that a success! Do some people use their brain before posting (unless you were being sarcastic, tecumseh)? I am not for any of the systems listed, I personally took advantage of the $39 Dreamcast price and $19 and under games to worry about the latest and greatest consoles 🙂

And accessories. Gotta have memory units, rumble packs, broadband adapters, Svideo cables and extra controllers, right? 😀

I believe some already said it but yes the Wal-mart thing is true. Also you may or may not know it but Wal-mart accounts for about 1/3 of Nintendo's sells in the US. Now I'm not saying that a third more GCs were sold but i am saying that is possible for that number given to be off by as much as 200,000 or more.

Now i do know that at my local T'R'US and BestBuy that there were almost twice as my Xboxs on the shelves as GCs, and almost no PS2s.
I also know that every store in town that had DreamCast was sold out within 2 days after Thanksgiving.
