Playstation 2 Ethics - do you think this is wrong?

Hypothetical situation.

You buy a Playstation 2 from a store with a good return policy, like Wal-Mart or Target.

It dies after the 90-day warranty from Sony is up.

The repair cost from Sony is around $120.

You buy another PS/2 from the same store, put the defective one in the box, and return it to get your money back, telling them it is defective so it does not go back on the shelf.

Right, or wrong?

Considering that i'm about to do the same thing with a pair of the headphones, no, it's not wrong. Having the highest defect ratio in the industry is wrong. Using the "warranty" you should have had in the first place isn't. And besides, why do you care? Go do it the smart way, put the $120 in your pocket and give everyone who disagrees with you the finger. Works for me :D

I'd say go for it. I've done it a few times myself (not for PS2's) over at Best Buy. Also I just recomended that course of action to a friend of mine that had their PS2 crap out.

I thought you could only exchange opened/defective game systems, you can return them for full credit?

That sounds like a good idea, Lord Maul. The problem is that the most commonly defective components on the PS/2 are the motherboard and the laser assembly. The laser is $120 and the motherboard is like 200 bucks. Those two parts cost more than the entire thing.

You can buy a GeForce 3 video card and get a lifetime replacement warranty - and it will be cheaper than a PS/2. Most automobiles have 3 year, 36,000 mil warranties. Why does Sony have a high end electronic item with such a poor warranty? Especially with all of the PS/2 quality control problems.

That I don't know for sure. At the very least I thought you could get store credit. Or just return it when they're out of stock or something.

Yes it's wrong

Just because YOU don't like the warranty gives you no right to SCREW someone else.

You knew the risk when you bought it, just because you don't "like" the warranty isn't a good excuse to swap them out.

Sony should have a better warranty? Then don't buy the damn thing.

Sony screwing users with a short warranty? Sure they are.

All you do is make the costs higher for other folks, and make returns more difficult for those who actually do have problems.

OK, OK...then you already have your answer.

Buy a Geforce 3 and get rid of the pesky consoles. :D

you cant do that. the barcode when you buy a console nowadays is the barcode directly on the console itself. there is a little opening on the box to do this. i think thats how it was for my PS2. i know it was like that for my GBA.

BECAUSE THEY SUCK. Every Sony product I've had that was made within the last 10 years (excluding the Wega) have been pieces of sh!t. Don't buy the products, that simple.

not me. if i did that, then i would have to worry about driver issues, a game library i dont like (console vs pc), and playing with a group of friends cramped around a monitor. even a 21" monitor wont do it justice.

Don't get me wrong, I'd never spend 300 bucks on a PS/2, X-Box, or any console when I could nicely upgrade my computer at any point in time.

But my brother bought a PS/2 and the thing crapped out on him, and he's been going through this situation. He sent his in for repair, but I was just curious as to what y'all thought. ;)

Allz I can say is chill. Risk it and don't like the warranty..what the heck is that....it's a $300 investment for cripes sake!!! At least you admit that Sony is screwing users with the warranty. He's not screwing anybody else...Sony's taking a loss on the hardware regardless. They more than make up for it with their software, as any good console manufacture should (which I think is the downfall of Nintendo, but that's another story) I mean geez, lighten up already! (BTW, this is my first flame....)

Downfall of Nintendo? Nintendo takes in more than double the 2nd largest publisher in software sales. #1=Nintendo, #2=EA. Never knew they went downhill :)

Not taken as a flame :) I understand why people do it, but by doing so you only let Sony get away with releasing crappy products. Sony makes piss ass products, but it doesn't give you any right to screw them, or the retailer. They have to pay folks to box them up, do the return work, and ship them back. Then Sony has to repair the unit and sell it as a refurb, taking another loss most likely. Plus it botches the numbers for faulty new units.

You guys hold the votes. Keep buying that Sony crap. They'll just keep getting bigger, and you'll just keep having more problems. Then the point will come where stores will check to see if the PS2 being returned is actually the one that was just bought, and you'll be completely screwed then.

only a 90 day warranty. what a load of hooey. beware though sometimes manufacturers put serial #'s on boxes and sometimes the store on receipts. i dont know about the ps2 specifically though.

if sony only offers such a crappy warranty on a $300 product they deserve to be screwed.

There are only so many upgrades that I can think of that are worthwhile for me.

All I need is a new vid card to stop UT from crashing on me, but other than that, I'm content with my computer. Since I got my rig built, I've practically stopped going to computer hardware sites now. And sure you see me in AT forums.. but in OT. So to me $300 to upgrade a computer which I basically use only for school, internet, AIM, UT (if it stopped crashing), would be a complete waste.

Plus with computers, when ppl come over, you have to tell them what the specs are before they give a response of "cool" and what not. With consoles, they know what you have and can say "cool" without you having to say anything.

heh. that was totally sidetracked from the thread topic

Right on! :) I have a sony dvd player and found out on another forum that there was a crapload of complaints about it dying right after the warranty was up. It was an existing problem with the earlier series of sony dvd players. They would just die within a year. Sony knows about it yet refuses to do anything about it. They charge ridiculous prices for "fixing" it. The price to "fix" it usually costs around the price of a new one. My dvd player hasn't crapped out yet but I'm expecting it to. :p By supplying products that crap out easily, they're just bringing this unethical issue of "exchanging" broken new for new onto themselves... Heh gets you questioning if sony actually does this on purpose....

Won't even let me have my first flame huh?:) Anywaze...although I'm just short of being a Sony Fanboy, I do agree with what you're saying to a point. The bigger the corperations get, the more they'll screw you over.
BTW, my point of the downfall of Nintendo (yes, they are big, yes they sell a lot) ever since the SNES, they haven't really supported their hardware with software. I mean, how many games are there for the N64? How many were put out by Nintendo? That's what's keeping me from even considering getting a gamecube, lack of software. Only a few titles worth paying $50 for. Since the N64 fiasco, the only thing keeping Nintendo afloat is their name. Anywaze, getting off-topic in off topic.
To get back on topic...screw the big compainies, here's to the little man pouring his hard earned dollars on a product that's supposed to make him forget about life for a while, and doing what he can to eradicate any injustice.

the way i see it, is, most large companies like sony will screw you every chance they get, as hard as they possibly can, as long as it doesnt hurt them. so why not return the favor? :)
