FYI - They put a 1/2 price sale on with PlayOn until June 31st. Use coupon code PLAYON1999 to get the software for $19.99.

UPDATE: Local media browsing is now supported using PlayOn with your PS3 or 360.

Just received this in the mail:

LOCAL MEDIA BROWSING (beta)

That's right. You can now enjoy your digital media throughout your home! You can see all of your digital photos on your PLAYSTATION 3 or Xbox 360, listen to your stored music, and watch videos stored on your PC. And you can do all of this through the same PlayOn Digital Media Server you have been using to enjoy Hulu, Netflix, and YouTube. There is no need to maintain a separate Digital Media Server -- how is that for convenient?

So - if you want to stream the MP3s stored on your computer to your living room, watch home movies stored on your office PC in your bedroom, or flip through that slide show of your summer vacation in your media room, now you can!

In the interest of keeping the OP from growing each time there is an update, I am consolidating some of the PlayOn information here, and will simply add new information as new posts in this thread, and update this post when necessary with the basics.

Let's keep this thread updated until Netflix is added. That's when I'll jump on this.

Great. Of course it doesn't work for me.

I get an error that says:

Can't play this content because it may not be supported. For more info, go to Xbox.com/support.

Status code: 69-C00D36C4

So, I go to Xbox.com and look up the code and it only says:

Either the video codec or the audio codec is unsupported, or one of the streams in a video file is corrupted.

Fantastic.

This happens on everything - YouTube, Hulu, CBS, etc. Brilliant piece of software if I can get it to work though.

edit: Ah well, this explains it

The hot items that we're looking into now are:

* A lot of you are able to view the clips and titles and images for all the various feeds from Hulu, YouTube, CBS, etc. But when you try to play any video, you see either "This content may have been deleted by the media server." (on the PS3), or "Status code: 69-C00D36C4" (on the Xbox). We're close to figuring this one out, so please be patient. Check back often for updates.

This happened to me a lot when trying to use Hulu. I would either get that message or a connection lost error. I just assumed it was because I have had problems with my laptop and 360 in the past, but obviously there's an issue here. I usually was able to get it to work eventually if I tried a different video or retried the same one.

Found another problem. After installing PlayOn, I switched my video source from Homer (my PC) to PlayOn: homer. Well, PlayOn can't share Media from your PC yet so I didn't have access to all my shared folders. So, I pressed 'X' to change my video source back to just Homer only to find Homer is no longer listed.

So, now I have to uninstall this. Maybe I'll reinstall it once they fix these two issues.

Damn... it won't install on a 64-bit OS. My main PC and file server are both 64-bit :(

[edit] Well, I sent them an email asking about 64-bit OS support and they sent me a link for a different beta that they are working on for 64-bit machines. It installed fine, but it's very late so I won't have time to test it out until tomorrow.

Anybody get this working on the PS3? I want to hear some success stories before I install this on my computer.

Sure it does, but not all of these other features work on the Wii. It also only works if you've purchased the Internet Channel.

Well, it almost works. I can see the media server, I see see all the files and thumbnails on all of them and they all load very fast. When I try to play them, I get a 'The folder could not be accessed. The content may have been deleted from the media server.' Happens on every video. I'll report back once I try a few things, but if this works, it will ROCK.

Found this in regards to my error; http://www.themediamall.com/blog/?p=33

Hey there! This is the CTO, David, and just wanted to let everyone know that we?re very excited about this beta release. We?ve already definitely gotten a ton of feedback from many of you. Thank you! Right now, the issues that have taken center stage for our developers are:
1. Windows 64-bit support: Tons of you have written in asking about 64-bit support, and we should be able to have a test release within a day or two!
2. Some of you have had issues where no media can play at all. You see all the clips and thumbnail images while you browse through all the shows, but when you select them to watch, it consistently fails. On the PLAYSTATION 3, the error looks something like: The folder could not be accessed. This content may have been deleted by the media server. On the Xbox 360, you might see Status code: 69-C00D36C4. We?re working very hard to fix this, and will try to keep you updated. We definitely appreciate your patience.
In the meantime, don?t be shy with your feedback. Our in-house user forum isn?t working right quite yet, but we encourage you to contact us directly with questions or suggestions. We definitely listen to what you have to say, and we work hard to make PlayOn the best it can be.

so how does it work exactly?

Once you go to that media server, is it just a list of movies? How easy is it to browse?

Also, is it just a 1 time $30 price, not too bad if it is.

Most of these types of programs are just that, $30 one time (though future upgraded versions could be additional).

Once you see the media server, its a list of content (you can browse by Title, Popularity, Date Added, etc).
