Is that what I'll have to do with an HP Stream 13.3" laptop, with Win8.1 w/Bing, that got a serious virus? I don't think that the owner ever made a recovery USB drive. I've read that there isn't really a general OEM Win8.1 w/Bing install ISO available.

How bad is the virus? If you can boot into win8.1 then you can use win8.1 to create a system restore image which would give you a clean factory install of win8.1 with bing. Alternatively you could try upgrading from win8.1 to win10 and then doing a clean install of win10 from MS's win10 iso.

Registered for this forum to thank ravicc for his information. I purchased the cable from the same vendor and installed it alongside a WD Blue 320 GB hard drive (purchased directly from a brick and mortar TigerDirect store). My experience was not without its own difficulties. The first cable that was sent to me was defective. The ebay vendor responded to my reply and sent me another (they ship from China). The second one did in fact work. I took apart the first to see if I could figure out what was wrong with it; seemed that some of the microsolder points had overlapped, so be aware that quality control, and therefore quality on this cable may not be to the highest standard. It did and is working though. I installed the cable and drive after having increased the RAM to 12 GB and upgraded to Windows 10 (I created the recovery media from Windows 8).

To upgrade to Windows 10 I used the Windows 10 tool from Microsoft.

Paired it with the following:

Very satisfied with the modular setup I've created. Thanks again for the help ravicc. If I have some time I'll post pics of it, along with the internal cable and hard drive. Anyone know where I can find compatible hard drive screws?

Click to download Wimboot 8.1 with Bing - fix by Chris Coroner
It is a modified OS, being a re-code of the original Wimbot 8.1, with the Recovery image .wim file partition, split from the complete image file, and supplied as a separate batch file. This makes the Wimboot image small enough to mount onto a 16gb SSD of a minipc or notebook and still actually be functional
