Playing movies on Wii

Is this possible out of the box? Ideally would like to stream videos directly from OS X to the Wii, or else play it off the SD card slot. I don't have Opera browser on my Wii though which I understand is a must for these media center-type applications?

Well then, that settles it. Thanks.
Nintendo has been pretty "focused" on keeping it just a game console. IE not spending the money to license Divx / DVD support to keep costs down.

If you want a media center hub, I suggest either a HTPC with HDCP support / Blu-Ray player, a PS3, or an xbox 1 modded into a media center.

Having had two HTPCs, I would recommend a PS3, personally.

I would need the Opera browser on the Wii to view them via TVersity, wouldn't I?

Oh shoot, I thought you said you DO have the Opera browser. Yeah, you'd need the browser.

How much is opera, and how well does this work ?

The wii is the only thing on the TV in the "kids living room". If I could get it to stream their movies from my media server with an easy to use interface, it would actually be very useful for us..

$5 err.. should say 500 points

Opera's probably worth it. Only $5 and it's a lot of fun. Another thing you might want to consider is that the Wii supports USB keyboards, so the browser has much more potential if you just hook a keyboard up to it. Using the pointer to type is excruciatingly slow.

One thing to keep in mind, though - there are no parental controls (that I know of) on the Wii version of Opera. So you'll have to trust your kids.

THanks guys.. I was able to get it up and running with orb, streaming all the kids movies and cartoons (divx, xvid etc)..

Works fairly well.. I already had the browser too... The internet Channel was available, and I didnt have to buy anything. Previous owner must have made the purchase.

I don't have access to the shopping channel so I can't buy Opera. Can I buy the Wii Points cards instead?

If you don't have access to shopping channel, evn if you add Wii points, how are you going to buy it?😕

If you want to mess around with homebrew, I think some of the media players available support network streaming. There is also preliminary DVD support in one of the media players.

Check out wiibrew.org for info on homebrew and applications.
