Playing Movies on Widescreen monitor? Help.

Just got a new widescreen monitor and using both Windvd and Powerdvd only gives me widescreen movies played back in 4:3--like it were on a regular monitor. How do I change this? I don't want any stretching, I just want to be able to remove/reduce the black lines at the top and bottom while using the full width of my screen.

Thanks for any help.

btw- i'm on a Sony SCM-P234/b monitor using a 6800 ultra @ 1920x1200

Well...how do I get 16:9 then? I'm connected by dvi and there are no component inputs.

I don't know about the software players you are using, but I know some have an option to "compensate for display aspect ratio." You may need a piece of software that is aware that your screen isn't 4:3

I *think* I may ahve seen this option in Media Player Classic. This is a free download and uses existing CODECS and filters to play video, so with a software player installed it can play DVDs, you might want to check it out.

The latest versions of both dvd players should support it if you DVDs are wide screen format.

I have no doubt that they support it. I just don't know why it's not working... 🙁

btw- i'm using a nec 3500 dvd drive.

If you right click on the PowerDVD screen while a DVD is playing, from the menu that appears, make sure "Keep Aspect Ratio" is checked.

It is.

When I uncheck it...it'll scretch the pic horizonatlly and deinterlace the frames.

So the movie appears in 4:3 formate, full frame? If the DVD is widescreen, then there has to be a setting in the main menu (or if it's a double-sided DVD, flip it over).

I agree...but there's not.

In windvd, there is a 'widescreen monitor' checkbox, but even w/that checked...it doesn't work.

Am I the only one that's had this problem?

Your monitor is 16:10 so you'll always have black bars on top and bottom since widescreen dvd is 16:9. Checking keep aspect ratio should work. Also make sure pan and scan is off.

keep aspect ratio is checked.
pan and scan in off.

Still....same problem.

Does your monitors osd have any resizing option? That'll display full screen if not using the native resolution instead of using black bars. If it does make sure that is off. Also check your video card settings for something similar. I got an ATI card so I wouldn't know if yours does. But I know mine has such an option.

No resizing option. There is one in my nvidia control panel...but changing it doesn't help.

Great...i got it working now. Turns out...all the dvd's I was using were rather old (last of the mohicans, etc). Finally put in gladiator and it's working.....kinda.

New Problem:
It looks fine when I expand the window to the size of the desktop. But when I make it full screen, it looks like the there are small horizontal lines everywhere. (Is this deinterlacing?) It's kinda like if you put two pictures on top of one another and then moved them so that they're not quite on top of each other anymore.

So....how do I fix this new little issue?

Thanks!

okay....so it turns out that this is also happening in wmp10 when the HD videos are played full screen....but not when avi/mgeps are full screen...

Someone pm'ed me and told me to try it w/oc'ing turned off. Didn't work.

Could this indicate a video card gone bad?

new idea....when I run in 1920x1080 (as opposed to 1920x1200) it looks fine.

Do i need to adjust timings on my video card?

Fullscreen DVD playback problems are a known issue with the 66.93 Forceware.

Especially with the 6800s, which have a video processor that is supposedly buggy (the 6600s and 6200s are supposed to be fine, IIRC).

NVidia is still trying to get the video processor on the 6800s to work right, so there are still issues with video playback right now. Another version of the Forceware driver (one that doesn't try to use the video processor at all) should get rid of the problem, but you'll lose all video decode acceration until they get the bugs fixed.

hopefully this whole time you have been using a 16:9 enhanced ANIMORPHIC dvd right?
if you are trying to play a regular "widescreen" DVD thats not ANIMORPHIC you will get black bars on all sides no matter what you try, unless you use that weird powerDVD feature, which still makes things look weird.

YOur monitor is obvously broken.

I will help defray the cost of a new one by paying you $500 for it...

😉

I'm just jealous
