I currently have an Opteron 165 with 2 gigs of PC3200 Memory and a 7900GT video card.. would I be better off upgrading to say an 8800? Or should I concentrate on the motherboard/memory? Don't have a ton of money to spend at the moment so just trying to get the best bang for the buck right now. Thanks =).

What OS and what resolution you gaming at? Are you experiencing slowdowns or are you just trying to bump frames or play at a higher res?

Also, how much $$ do you have to spend?

Well, I probably have a few hundred.. I just would like to know if pouring into a faster video card for my current set up is worth it or should I put it towards upgrades elsewhere.

My max res is 1280x1024. I so need another monitor too ugh. Running 32 bit Windows XP Pro. Mainly looking to bump my fps and be able to have some of the graphical tweaks turned on.

Well at that res and with that budget you could probably get an 8800GT for $159.99 or $139.99 after MIR then save the rest and go towards upgrading your Mobo/CPU/RAM in that order.

I think, at that res, upping your RAM on your current setup will make little to no impact. The video card is the best bet, then focus on the rest after. There really is no point in upgrading to another S939 CPU right now, just wait until you can upgrade your mobo and CPU at the same time. I also don't think you need much more in the video card department, though you could just spend a little more and get an HD480 for $180 which will last you a little longer and be helpful if/when you upgrade your monitor.

Personally, I would not upgrade for Age of Conan.

Look for my AoC Performance Thread from a few days ago and that may help explain why I feel that way.

Yeah, the higher your detail settings, the quicker the OOM crash comes. Hold off on anything AoC related until they fix the game.

I was going to say that too. Funcom's swinging the nerf bat like a blindfolded kid at a pinata. Leveling up is decently fun though... until about 70 when every mob hits twice as hard, has 50% more HP and you have dodge roving level 80 gank squads to even have the pleasure of grinding said mobs.

I have to agree, if your upgrading your pc based of AOC, you're asking for it. I have issues running AOC on my 8800 Ultra OC'ed w/ Q6600. The game is just really really bad coding.

In short, I experienced no increase in performance from an 8800GT to an HD4870. The HD 4870 is clearly a more powerful card and noticably so but the same performance was given.

I am going to wait for the official 8.7 Cats to come down before I throw in my AoC towel but I havent played it in almost 5 days.

The irony of upgrading for Age of Conan is that it increases the likelihood that you will encounter the dreaded OOM error mainly becasue you are more likely to turn the settings up, add AA etc. which requires more memory in game.

I upgraded with a new build (E8400, GTX 280, 4GB RAM etc.) and am now able to turn up the settings to max at 25x16. However, with the latest patch, I am lucky to run 5 minutes before the OOM error kicks in. Previously, I ran with X2 4400 2GB RAM, 8800 GTX and all was fine albeit with lower quality settings.

Meanwhile the Funcom team is hard at work fine tuning character class attributes ... sheesh!

I've cancelled my account.

I really do hope more people close their accounts. The state and direction of this game is just completely unacceptable. Why haven't we had a lawsuit about this already?

A lawsuit for what? It's a game, just don't buy it/play it, and maybe write an angry letter to the company and maybe post about it on the forums, but a lawsuit would be ludicrous in my opinion.

Each patch brings out unimportant fixes, breaks other things in game and reduces FPS. (speaking very generally)

Age of Conan is great fun providing it works first time and works reasonably for a few weeks. The combat system for melee users is fantastic and fatalities are just pure eye candy, brutal yet artisitc at the same time.

I do agree with KeithTalent. Lawsuit would be ludicrous although as there are a large portion of the games fan base unable to log in or extend their subscriptions due to some glaring bugs, surely Funcom should be compensating these people fairly.

Well I understand buggy games at launch, I mean I played, or tried to play, Hellgate at launch and we all know how that ended up. These things have a way of working themselves out.

It is interesting though that Funcom seems to be degrading game quality with every patch released; very bizarre.

as weird as it may sound i liked many aspects of the game, but it was just too broken to justify continued payment..ill look at it again in 6 months or so

Add me to the list of people saying the best way to upgrade for Age of Conan is to cancel your account. I had a good time in the beginning, got to 80 fairly quickly, then found nothing at all to do but grind the same mobs/dungeons or run around in pointless gank squads. Unfortunately, the game is just too screwed up and totally unbalanced. It's a shame, really; I was pretty optimistic about this and thought they would have learned their lesson from AO, but it's almost an exact repeat of the AO release without the server instability.

AoC had amazing potential, but they've managed to squander it completely. They had a great, highly interactive and innovative melee system that gets trumped by casters who can push the same two buttons over and over to kill you. In a lot of situations, caster vs. melee fights just end up feeling like that scene in the first Indiana Jones movie where the guy pulls out the sword with a flourish, then Indy just shoots him. I've been following patch notes occasionally and it sounds like they've fixed some of these issues while lots of others have cropped up. And if you're Waiting on Warhammer ... from someone who's played beta: don't get your hopes up.

On the plus side, there's really an incredible amount of fun to be had going back and playing some of the classics. I recently dug up the Fallout series and I'm playing through that with the high-resolution patches at 1680x1050. Looks and works great, and man are they fantastic games. Re-playing the Baldur's Gate series with the high-res patches next, too. Should keep me occupied for quite a while.

Graphics card upgrade would be your best bet.

You should also overclock your cpu if you haven't already. The optys were pretty good in that regard :)

Yeah I'm in the same boat. The soundtrack was great, locations were great, universe was great, but there were just too many technical issues to justify paying for it.

Beta testers raced to the end-game content instead of actually going step-by-step and reporting bugs.

ah, the first part is true... however, there were quite a few game breaking bugs that was reported repeatedly and it still went live.

maybe not enough good programmers? (which explains why every patch so far comes riddle with bugs, last one being the night of invisible players on pvp server ganking fest, which actually isn't that bad, if you're on the rape train... :D)

link to show that it appears that the programmers cut and paste codes from Anarchy Online.

i guess we ARE a nation of whiners (however the things that we're whining about in the game is mostly legit)
