Just read tom's overview of day 1 at E3 and he mentioned that ps2 will be online capable via dsl only? He mentioned that users will have to buy a modem and hardrive in order to take advantage of online gaming. Can anybody confirm this and provide some more details? Does that mean that ppl have to buy a specific proprietary dsl modem and maybe even sign up with sony dsl service in order to play online?

While we're at this how is xbox online implementation. Hope that all you have to get is get a lan adapter if its not already build in.

XBOX is ready to go right out of the box. It has a built in NIC so you can connect to any broadband.

I seriously doubt the PS2 will be DSL only. At the most maybe broadband only, but to cut off everyone except DSL users would be insane. There are to many cable and 56k users to ignore.

I find that very hard to believe especially if, and I don't know, that if the connector is a RJ-45 then cable modem should work, especially through a router.

yes Tom is smoking crack again. . . or he was just misfed information. prolly the latter.

anyway, i have a copy of may '02 Sony Playstation "official" magazine in front of me, and in an article about PS2's online launch in August, the network adapter is NOT DSL only!!! according to the article it will be a type of RJ-45 connection for use with AOL, Prodigy, AT&T (Cox), Earthlink, etc and cost around $45. Additionally the HD will NOT be ready for launch with the online adapter and support, Sony says they havent finalizing the hardware yet, and that the games coming out for it at launch won't need it.

Don't worry guys, DSL isn't needed or necessary and neither is the HD . . yet. Tom blowing more smoke up your a$$es.

if you need a direct quote or copy paste, lmk. 😉

Man, this is the weakest crap I've seen. They drop the price of the PS2 and then say you can go online (broadband) if you buy some EXTRA hardware. And then they are announcing a HD? WTF? I better see some anti-MS people come in here and start talking about how this is a watered down PC just like they do about the XBox! Sh!t, the XBox has this right out of the box, and you can go online NOW!! The only valid b!tch I've seen about the XBox is the lack of game selection. Well that is growing real fast, so what's going to be the next b!tch about the XBox? I don't mean to make this into a which console is better thread but OBVIOUSLY MS is leading the way in innovation on its console. The SAME features the XBox was being dogged for, the PS2 is now getting praise for with an extra cost tacked onto it. Give me a freakin' break!
