If only she was 2 years older ;)

I doubt the PS2 would make her "dumber than a box of rocks." At the most, it would impede her studying and homework, but if she's getting a 4.0 now, she's probably very determined already. Think about it this way. Gamers are usually nerds who are, for the most part, pretty smart and will grow up to have a degree in CS or CE or something that pays decent ;) You don't have to weed out as many losers from her prospective dates. :D

Ok, I just got back from Walmart. They had all three showing. The XBox looks like it has slightly better graphics than the other two. I fiddled with an NFL football game on it. It took forever to load, which drove me crazy so I can only imagine what fidgety teenagers would think. The "cube" looks decent and loads and plays pretty fast. The graphics on the PlayStation 2 remind me of the old Nintendos, with a slightly dark tint to the colors. It too was pretty fast to get up and running. Looking throught the games, only the "cube" had a few games I thought she would like now. Most of these platforms demonstrate a strong male dominance in their design and the games. I'm sure this reflects their intended audience. I think I'll wait until September 20th or so and take a second look after the new games come out. If I had to choose now I think I'd go with the XBox even if it is another Microsoft product. Can you overclock the Xbox? :)

You guys have been an enormous help pointing me in the right direction. I really appreciate the broad expertise we have on this forum.

Best Regards,
Robert

I don't think anyone has really overclocked the Xbox yet but it has serious potential to do about anything you want..... It really a PC in a box with a new Microsoft OS. An MIT student cracked the security code a while back and said he could install all sorts of stuff (software for playing movies, music and surfing the web) but he kept the code a secret.... But yeah on the whole its just a PC (which is why its the best looking :) )

Load times have been a big debate... Nintendo Hates them and stuck to cartriges (no load time at all) in their last System (the N64) but Sony introduced discs and even though there was load time.... the space, and ease of development was just better. So now everyone is on disc but Gamecube made their discs half the size of a normal DVD to save on the load time (yet again this also cuts out a bit on the graphics power)

One more thing to consider is if you'll want another DVD player... The Gamecube cannot play DVDs because of how it uses much smaller discs.... The Playstaion can right out of the box I believe and the Xbox can as well but you have to buy a 20-30 dollar extra thing that opens DVD play... Just another thought to keep in mind that you can use this as a rec room DVD Player or something pending which one you buy

I have PS2 and a Gamecube

I think either would suit her nicely

i know a few girls that luv their cube they are 20 and not 14 though

I dont like X-box for numerous reasons and dont plan on getting one
mainly because the only genre it dominates the other 2 is sports which I dont really enjoy playing sports games that much
