A friend of mine burned his DVD onto a DVDr, but only the movie... no menus, just the film. Popped it into his xbox - vuala - dvd player!

In the end isn't it going to cost him more than just buying the adapter? And he doesn't have the menus and special features...

Heres an idea, buy a dvd from a shop that you like, bring it home and play it on your dvd player, cool eh?

I guess its a neat feature if you already have a DVD Burner. Other than that, might as well buy the remote.

Neat discovery.

good to know you can watch copied DVDS in your XBOX without the remote.

I am kind of pissed that you neede the remote to play DVDS.

They should have enabled it to play DVDS without the remote like the PS2. And not force you to buy the remote to watch dvds.

Did he just copy the vob files or did he have to convert the files to some other format svcd?

i agree that you should have been able to play DVD's w/o their remote, sure the majority that use it will WANT the remote, but they shouldnt have made it mandatory.

But then again, you could also say that those who already own a DVD player don't want to have the cost of the DVD feature included in the price of the Xbox.

Everyone knows that neither MS nor the retailers are getting rich off selling Xbox's for $180. Selling the DVD kit separately, and only to those who want it, is just one way of MS recouping their profits.

I have absolutely no problem with it. If you think about it, $180 (plus games/accessories) for this much entertainment is a pretty damn good deal.

The xbox would have cost more to make if it could play dvd's without the remote. The problem is licensing the dvd technology which is what you're paying for by buying the remote. You can get around this with a modchip and some special software.
