Yellow gold is also currently "out of style." It goes in cycles, but currently silver and white gold is far more prevalent than yellow gold. Check back in 10 years and yellow gold will be all the rage.

IMHO, go with platinum. It's harder than white gold, which ensures the rock will have a smaller probability of falling off if one of the prongs catch a snag. Or did I get the hardness mixed up?

Actually, white gold is harder, but platinum will stay brilliant whereas white gold will turn yellowish after a while (I have a white gold ring, so I know).

I just bought my girlfriend a ring, though not an engagement. We've only been seeing each other for exactly 6 months come Aug 6th and her bday is next week, so I got her her favorite gemstone, white gold ring, with some smaller diamonds on the side of the gemstone.

First off, I recommend you go to K's Merchandice. They have a really large selection and a good price. I wouldn't recommend spending much on a diamond because of the whole situation with diamonds right now and how they are going to lose value. DeBeer's is controlling and holding onto most of the stock of diamonds, but once diamonds will be able to be mass produced to perfection at a decent cost, you'll see the price of diamonds plummet.

debeers sold their diamond industry for several billion.

man made perfect diamonds costs $3k for 2carats. you can't tell the difference under a lux because it's a real diamond. the only way you know it's man made is by using a special machine to tell if it's too perfect.
