Plaster Walls - need to make router more powerful

I'm currently in an an old 1920's apartment that has plaster walls.

I have a wireless Netgear MR814v2 router, and I have a netgear wireless NIC. I've had very inconsistent reception when the router was about 15 feet down and around the corner of a wall. I was able to move it into the same room with my computer, and all has been well since.

However, I'm moving to another apartment, this one also with plaster walls. But the router will have to be in a completely different room than my computer.

So I was curious what anyone may recommend for me. I've seen some antennas that are supposed to add signal strength on newegg. Any of these particularly good or certains ones I should avoid?

Also, I'm sure this isn't helping, but the antenna on my card has become quite lose, and doesn't stand straight up anymore. I never had good reception with these walls even when the antenna was on proper, but could this make a huge difference too?

Again, any advice would be much apprecaited.
Thanks
Tyler

1. you can add an access point, make it act as a repeater
2. you can get a linksys router and put linux firmware on it and increase the power that way

or upgrade to a G router, they're supposed to get better range. my d-link g router has pretty good range, from the second floor to the basement.

thanks for the replies.

I will definately read the articles.

Has anyone used some of the antennas they sell on new egg? Or the new range extender by netgear? I'm not really wanting to buy another router as I hear that can slow things down a bit, but if it comes to it that is probably what i will do.

thanks again for the responses.

I tried the antennas, well one - a Hawkings one. It did NOT do anything for the signal strength. I was thinking of purchasing a powered antenna but those are close to $100. Now I'm looking into AP from two routers or maybe just running a long ass cat5 to the other rooms...
