Hi guys, I am in a buying mood and am getting some new speakers and figured I should get a new vid card too..

I just bought 2 gigs of ram,
A DuoCore 4500 2.2
Gigabyte GAP35

but I only have an EVGA 7600 gt 256mgs

I am playing Crysis right now and know that it would look better if the card would match my other components...

But I don't want to break the bank with the latest and greatest..

8800GS if you're at 1280x1024 or lower

9600GT if you're in between these

8800GTS 512 if you're at 1600x1200 or higher

Your upgrade actually parallels what I just did for my girlfriend very closely. Same mobo, similar CPU (I got her a 2180 that I am in the process of OCing), same amount of RAM, and similar old GPU. I gave her my old 8800GTS 320, as she games at 1440x900 and the memory shouldn't be too limiting at that resolution.

Thanks guys...id "like" to run at my native res which is 1900x1200 on most games but if not then what ever I can get closer to it...my price I suppose would be around $200-250

EDIT: Ok seriously? I just looked at new cards and its up to 640mgs now? holy ****! LOL I feel dumb

UPDATED SIG

no, you don't want the 640MB card. It's old tech and very overpriced for what it is. You want the 512MB GTS.

At 1920x1200 I strongly recommend the GTS. It's what I've got in my rig (see sig) and only three games give me pause. Crysis and Lost Planet on the GPU front, and SupCom kicks my CPU's butt.

I can still run Crysis/LP at native res with *mostly* high settings (drop shadows and a couple other performance-hungry-but-visual-experience-light settings) and maintain a stable 30+ fps in Crysis and 45+ in LP.

No! Do NOT get the 320MB or 640MB version of the GTS as they are based on the old core (G80) where the new 512MB version is based on the new core (G92). An 8800GT is faster than the G80 GTS, you want the G92 GTS.

Again, the 640 is worse than the 512, the 640 and 320mb models are based on the g80 core while the 512 is based on the g92, less heat and more power. Also you don't really need all that dedicated vid memory for most games or apps for that matter, don't worry about it.

So will this give me noticeable improvements over my 7600GT or just marginal? With this setup would I be better off going with a GT? Especially if I play a lot of Crysis etc?

Thanks

Huge improvement over a 7600GT. Nothing plays Crysis 'well' (everything on max with AA/AF high rez) but the best compromise is a GTS 512, itll play 1920x1200 w/ medium/high 30+fps.

GTS 512MB (G92) > GT (G92) by a good amount.
That $50 rebate on the GTS takes it down to almost GT price range so there's no point in getting a GT anymore.

Well... good amount is subjective. They clock to about the same caps and I think the gts has a dozen or so extra shaders, but is stock clocked higher. It's a few pts increase. Main improvement is the cooler.

Well either way, I just want to be able to bump up Crysis from low to medium and higher res.. and be happy I bought a new card instead of a Wii for the living room :) (which i still might do)
