So it looks like my plan of moving to the West Coast is going to be put off for a year or so. I'm going to be working in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and will need to find an apartment in that area.

Wife and I like to be able to walk to things and would like to be fairly close to the beach. I'd want it to be relatively safe area as my wife will be out walking the dogs a lot.

Any suggestions on where to look?

Ft.lauderdale is my home town. great place imo. Im bout 25 miles west in coral springs a very nice area also, upper middle class, you might want to look for an apartment in coral springs, there are a couple very nice places. Ft.lauderdale at night is not what i would call safe area.

How long a drive is it from Coral Springs to E Oakland Park Blvd and Bayview Dr. during rush hour? That is the general area where the office is located.

really? I walked all up and down A1A when i was vacationing there and it seemed pretty safe to me. Himmarshee village seemed pretty safe as well, maybe a bunch of drunks but no gangs or anything like that. everything else seemed like million dollar houses to me

Last time I was down there was a year and a half ago...but I wasn't paying attention as I wasn't planning on moving there. It seemed Ft. Lauderdale in general was a relatively quiet/safe are vs. Miami...but are there specific parts of Ft. Lauderdale I shoudl avoid?

my MIL lives there in sunrise. she's about 30 minutes west of ft lauderdale beach areas. the wife has a friend who retired to the beach area. i can try to find out the name of that area. it was pretty quiet with nice houses of the middle class to upper middle class looking type.

the sunrise area pretty much requires driving to everything. there's lot of retirement communities there. the area where the wife's friend lives had lots more to do in walking distance.

It has been a long time since I've been down to ft lauderdale. But you pretty much need a vehicle to go anywhere in FL. Shit is usually so spread out and public transportation is a serious joke.

That being sad, FL sucks balls big time.

I live in Miami Beach, but get up to Ft Laud sometimes. What are you looking for price wise?

I have a friend that lives in a really nice building at Oakland Park Blvd. and A1A that I think runs around $1500-$1700 a month for a two bedroom, so a one bed is probably more like $1200-$1400. It's a really safe, nice area right by the beach, and it would be extremely close to where you work as well (less than a mile). There are three or four bars/restaurants right across the street, and they are on the intracoastal.

Edit:

The building is called The Tides at Bridgeside Square, which are apparently condos. But if you call a realtor in the area, they can find you one of the units that is for rent.

Awesome...thanks. That is the range that we are shooting for 1200-1600. Being able to walk to work would be perfect. Hopefully I'll be able to head down there a time or two to scope the area out...just trying to do some pre-planning searching to get a good idea.

Lived in Fort Lauderdale for 20 out of my 25 years. Walking is non-existent. You will need to get a car to go anywhere in FL, unless you want to visit the beach and have a beachside condo 50 ft from the shore.

I live closer inland (about 5 miles from the beaches). Heading from west to east is generally pretty bad, especially from Coral Springs to the beach. Not like LA bad, but it is still terrible. It's the opposite during the evening where everyone is heading west back home from the east.

It took me roughly 45 minutes (about 9 miles) to get to work in traffic from Commercial/Turnpike to the Beach area near Broward Blvd.

Thanks. I'll definitely be trying to find something closer to the beach then so my commute is minimal (and his hopefully just a walk).
