Planning trip on west coast/need help for ideas

So, this august I am planning a 3 week- 1month trip around the west coast of the states.
Ill be starting off in Portland where Im visisting some friends. then driving down the coast to Eureka and the National Redwood Forest in NoCal. Down thru San Francisco to see the golden gate bridge and alkatraz. Down to Santa Barbara to meet a friend and stay for a while to learn to surf. Then over to vegas for a week of poker - also want to visit the grand canyon. then north to idaho falls - and maybe visit Yellowstone.

Any neat/helpful little tips or hints (or points that are must sees) that you can give would be great!

cliffs:
1. Portland Oregon - 2days
2. Eureka, California - Redwood forests - 2days
3. San Francisco - 2days
4. Santa Barbara - 8-10days
5. Las Vegas - approx 8-10days
6. Idaho Falls - Yellowstone - 2days

This!

Also, SB is generally pretty terrible to surf in summer, the swells come out of the south-southwest and Sb is pretty sheltered up there by the channel islands. You can probably pick up decent waves in ventura county though. But other than that, have fun.

THis is the info Im looking for! So would Malibu be more ideal for waves - and remember I have never surfed before, so im looking for newb waves. I was told Carpenteria was also a good place to learn?

In-N-Out is a definite MUST! good call.

sounds like a fun trip.
Since you'll be in the area, the Hearst Castle looks like it would be a cool place to see. I've never been there, maybe it sucks... it looks cool in pics though.

Yeah...a week in Vegas would be too much for me. With my bankroll its about 3-4 days, tops.

1. If you're near Crater Lake in Oregon, it's stunning.
2. See the giant sequoias, drive your car through the trunk of one
3. Beautiful city, with justified reputation
4. Nice area
5. See Hoover dam if possible, stand on the top of it and look down 😱
6. Yellowstone is a great NP

Have fun and if possible, bring a digicam.

Im an avid poker player, so my time in Vegas will be nestled comfortably around a table - i can easily play 8 days straight 10 hour days. not a prob.

The only cool places you're going to is Vegas/Yellowstone. Everything else in that list sucks.

Your opinion is biased just because you are from there and used to it. Most of my time while in that area will most likely be spent in the ocean surfing, or on the beach babewatching - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqNXE07fKuw

NO san diego zoo? Or better yet, the wild animal park outside of La Jolla?

yeaaa, i dunno, i think I would like to do something a little more interesting than look at a bunch of sad animals on my vacation.

Cut down on your time in Eureka (not much to do there) - hit one redwood forest there, check out a few more as you head south, like MacKerricher Park or Montgomery Woods in Mendocino County and Muir Woods just north of San Francisco.

If you're set on planning two days in Eureka check out the redwoods and then spend some time hiking the Lost Coast.

In SB make sure you pick up some tar remover. If you're walking around barefoot on the beaches you'll be sure to get some stuck to your feet.

If I were you I'd stop in and see Hearst Castle on the way down. Always wanted to do that, never got the chance.

Hearst Castle is pretty interesting, but I'm not sure if it's worth the time. There's a ton of artwork and historical items that Hearst collected. It is beautiful along the coast there though.

That much time in Vegas is crazy though unless that includes the Grand Canyon. Also, Yosemite is really amazing if you've never been.

I dont care how much you love to play poker, your body wont handle Vegas for a week straight. Last time i was there for 3 nights and i had to take a vacation from my trip when i got home.
Yellowstone is sweet, 2 days is not enough time there though. I doubt you could even drive though the whole park and see everything in that amount of time. The roads are all 35 or 40 mph and its usually slow going in the summer months, it will be bumper to bumper in some parts of the park.
Yosemite is amazing, so is Glacier.

Hearst looks pretty cold for at least a couple hours visit.
I was thinking that my time at vegas would include the grandcanyon (and a trip to hoover dam? Not sure how far away it is yet, havent gotten that far.).
You guys may be right, I should cut down on vegas time and spend more time at yellowstone (or check out yosemite - seems a bit out of my way?).

1. Portland Oregon - 2days
2. Eureka, California - Redwood forests - 2days
3. San Francisco - 2days
4. Santa Barbara - 8-10days
5. Las Vegas - approx 8-10days
6. Idaho Falls - Yellowstone - 2days

Also- these times would include driving. so its more like
1. Portland Oregon - 1days
2. drive all day
3. Random Redwood Forests and hiking - 1days
4. drive all day
5. San Francisco - 1days
6. drive all day / hearst castle
7. Santa Barbara - 8days
8. drive all day
9. Las Vegas - 8days
10. drive all day
11. Idaho Falls - Yellowstone - 3days?

Id prefer to tent when I can so that Im not tied down by exact dates that I need to be at places. Vegas would proly be the only place I would have to book real far in advance?

awesome link -will come in handy for sure.

i sincerely suggest that you try out some offroad ATVing in the sand dunes...possibly the funnest thing i've done in cali
