I didn't realize that there is a restriction to gun sales based upon sexual preferences.

Wow, only two posts to complete derailment, that has to be some kind of record!

And it looks like you answered your own question.

You're turning 21 and the first thing you want to buy is a gun? Dude, you should be buying booze.

Take some lessons and become a regular at a shooting range before you go buying a gun. That is assuming you aren't already doing those things.

The Brady Bill is still in effect on all pistols.
They will call the Firearms Licensing Center and give them your Social Security number for a quick background check.
One of the following happens:
1) You pass instantly and can buy it and take it home.
2) You are put on an up to 5 day waiting period because something brought up a red flag. You come back later and buy it.
3) You are denied because of a felony.

You don't have to give your Social Security Number if you do not want to.

Correct, but giving it increases the chance of not getting red flagged.

Go to "Target World" in Sharonville... right around where 75 and 275 meet. (on Kemper road, I think?) The guys there are pretty helpful and hear their classes are decent (Classes on safety, storage, cleaning, etc.).

Wait for a gun show to come to Sharonville convention center... it comes about 3 or 4 times a year. They usually have some good deals there and the whole buying process is streamlined.

Heh, I've stopped by there a few times after work, but there was a 1.5-2 hour waiting period to shoot on the range and I didn't have the time to wait. But thanks for the advice on the gun show ;) I'll see if there's one near my birthday.

edit: soonest show is in October :( Are the prices worth a 4-5 month wait for a Glock 19?

From what I've heard, you can save about 10-25% on some guns. Depends on how fast the money is burning through your pocket. ;) I haven't personally been to one of them, but I have a friend that goes once a year and usually spends his tax return there.

Dunno if the savings on the gun would be worth the gas, but they are in Dayton every month.

I would definitely go to one of the gun shows first.

Sharonville and Dayton both have good shows, especially for a beginner.
After you've been to Bill Goodman's in Dayton, 50 times, it starts to all look the same.

You can see a ton of pistols at once and hold them all.
New, old, used, collectors, etc.

If you buy from a private collector (half of them are private collectors), you don't need to do any paperwork.
You just hand over the cash.
That way, your name isn't in "the system".
Some people don't like the govt knowing they own a gun.
When Hilary gets in office, she will take all our guns away! :)
(You'll hear that line a bunch at the gun shows)

Oh, and when buying at a gun show, the price is ALWAYS elevated by at least $50-100.
ALWAYS offer a lower price. If you want it for a lower price, and they won't take it, just walk away. About an hour later, come back and offer it again. A lot of times, they will take it.

Thanks for the advice. Dayton isn't so far that it isn't worth the gas money. I'll check out one of the shows up there.
