Planned system upgrade - would appreciate comments

Hi,

I'm planning to do a basic system upgrade to my existing machine and have picked out these components - would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Would be used for gaming as well as video encoding applications etc.

1. ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe - $167
2. eVGA 6800 GT 256MB PCIe - $340
3. AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego - $325
4. Cooler Master Real Power 550W SLI-ready - $130
= $962

Prices may differ very slightly, but these are the best I could find after considering taxes/shipping etc. Already have a decent case, hard drives, memory etc.

Some reasoning:
1. Motherboard was reviewed very well in general - the DFI LanParty is probably better at overclocking, but don't see myself doing this too much anyway.
2. 6800GT gives the best value right now, as the 6800Ultra is still overpriced. Not going with ATI simply due to SLI allows for simple expansion later on - Crossfire is too far down the line. eVGA brand seems to be quite stable and has the best value right now.
3. A64 3700+ is right around my budget and the ~150 price increase for the 4000+ is too much for the added performance imo. Anyone know if the 3800+ Venice might be a better choice? Higher speed, but 1/2 the cache with an added cost of approx 45 - is it worth it?
4. Also looked at the Antec TruePower 550 and there was very little difference. 600W seems like overkill, and this PSU has received good reviews in general.

Anything I'm missing with regards to these items? Down the line, I should be able to add another 6800GT or replace the CPU with an Athlon 64 X2 when the latter drops in price.

Thanks in advance.

ps: just read a couple of threads saying SLI is not a good upgrade path? My view is that since I need to upgrade several items, the 7800 is out of my league at this time. Sure, I could wait a while for prices to drop, but when is that ever going to stop?

Thanks for the info, did not know about this. This should be useful if the 7x00 series comes out and is affordable or this in turn causes the 6800 ultra prices to drop significantly. Lot can happen in 90 days...looks like eVGA is the choice here :)

Also, I've always used the stock coolers that come with retail CPU kits. Since I won't be overclocking too much, is there any other benefit with getting 3rd party (e.g. zalman) coolers?

bummmmp...

Just 2 issues outstanding, would appreciate any suggestions:

1. 3800+ Venice w/512 kB cache or 3700+ San Diego w/1MB cache??
The Venice is about 45 bucks more, but I haven't been able to find any specs as to which would actually perform better...again, main usage is standard encoding apps and games. Extra amount isn't the issue, just need to know which is the better CPU.

2. Stick with A64 retail box cooler, or spend the extra $$ to get a 3rd party one? No plans on overclocking, so it is really necessary?

Also, any idea if WinXP will freak out if I simply switch in the new mobo and CPU? Currently, using an nforce2 based chipset and going to nforce4. I know a clean install is the best option, but given my current HD configuration, that's going to be a mess...anyone tried this?

Actually the price difference between the two isn't that big. I've just read too many comments (newegg and elsewhere) of problems when installing the DFI (different BIOS', drivers etc). Also, I've read how its picky with regards to memory, especially Corsair XMS modules (which I currently have). The Asus on the other hand has been around the longest and seems much more stable. Just figured it wasn't worth the extra possible hassle for features that I wouldn't be using anyway.

Well, finally went ahead and bought all the stuff earlier today...

Final List (some new additions):

1. Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce4 SLI
2. AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego
3. eVGA 6800 GT 256MB PCI-E
4. Enermax EG565P-FMA 535W w/SLI support
5. Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000BWA Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower
6. Thermalright XP-90 heatsink
7. Panaflo FBA09A12M 90x25mm fan
8. Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

Current system: Athlon XP 2800+, ASUS A7N8X Deluxe, Radeon 9600 Pro and 2 sticks of Corsair Speed 512MB PC3200 RAM (migrating to new setup)

Hope the new configuration will speed things up a bit and will last for at least 12-18 months (might add another 6800GT later on when drop in price) :)
