I have no problem with companies no longer supporting software/hardware after a certain point.

I do have a problem with products that seem designed to die within a certain period of time (like people accuse ipod batteries of doing) and that are specifically designed to be not-repairable.

Ironic, my sister still uses a mixer purchased by my mom in the 50's. Granted, newer mixers might be more desirable by more advanced bakers.

I don't have a problem with manufacturers designing a product with a life expectancy of n years or months. Not everything needs to last 'forever'. The problem I do have is when they keep this a secret or present misleading advertising.

hence my hate for the iphone. Arrrrgh, if they would just put in a user replaceable battery like the rest of the damn world.

My grandfather left my dad and my uncle a crap load of saws and drill presses from the 50's. OMG, they are built to dismantle tanks.

I think he is referring to the theory that things like cars, major appliances, etc are all designed so that they will become obsolete within a fixed period of time.

So your appliances come with a stick of dynamite set to go off in four years? Might want to stop buying from Russians.

I didn't say I bought into the concept, just generally what the concept is.

Planned obsolescence

The only argument of substance there is that things get old, wear out, and eventually have to be replaced. No shit.

No sabotage here, things get old, that's what happens.

wow, you got so worked up over this thread that you snapped at someone who isn't even trying to go against you. Well done.

You have a very irregular definition of snapped.

Fine, replace "snapped" with "wigged out". Same conclusion.
