Planing a trip to a casino in Louisiana

I'm from Austin, TX and I'm planning on taking my girlfriend to a casino in Louisiana for spring break.

I don't know anything about casinos in the area so I thought I would see if anyone out there has any reccomendations.

We will be driving.
 
I suspect you will be there longer than a few hours, since it is spring break? Bring lots of cash AND EXPECT TO LOSE IT! That is the only way to enjoy yourself.
 
I'm about 45 min away from them. The nicest one is Harrah's Downs. It was built about a year ago. It used to be Lousiana Downs; it's a horse track. I don't know if the races are going right now, but they are fun to watch. The casino has no tables, just slots. It's extremely clean though.

If you are downtown next to all the other casinos, Hollywood is the better of the bunch.

All of the casinos are on boats. It's a technical thing. Casinos are not allowed on land in Lousiana (Harrah's being an exception because it is a race track).

Since you can't have them on land, next best thing is the water. You can't tell that they are boats though. The boats are on the Red River, but what they did was put concrete in the river to form a box. Then put the boat in the box. So it's impossible for it to move, but it's technically in the water.

When you go to one of the casinos, you can't tell it's a boat, looks just like a building inside, and you can't tell where you exit the building enterance (where there are shops and resturaunts) and enter the casino that you're walking onto a boat. Pretty dumb if you ask me, but meh.
 
Ok, as a long time resident of NW La, here are the scoops:

Horseshoe = most popular, they are number #1 since the day they open.
Sams Town = used to be Harrahs, decent place.
Hollywood = right by Sams Town.
Isle Of Capri = in Bossier City, about 5 minutes away.
BoomTown = very close to Isle.

Then we have Harrahs LA Downs. The horse race won't begin until April 29th. They don't have any table games <slots only>. The are the newest place so everything is new and clean.

Why don't you just check out all the casinos and see which one fit you? Different strokes for different folks. PM me if you need more info.

If you're going to go all that way, you might as well go to Biloxi and get the benefit of all of the casinos there.

I've heard bad things about Harrah's in NO, but I've never been there.
 
If you stop in Lake Charles (my hometown), Harrahs is much nicer than the Isle of Capri. In Baton Rouge, we have the Argosy and Casino Rouge. I've only been to the Argosy

One of the nicest (and best) Louisiana casinos I've been in is land-based: The Grand Casino Coushatta in Kinder. They have the best buffet - EVER!

Really, what did you hear? I went and played Black Jack and Poker, and it was much nicer than the crap in Philadelphia, MS.

I've heard the food was bad, the people rude, and then there's actually driving there.

Like I said, I've never been there, so I can't comment. I just figured I'd give my home state a little boost. 😉

Oh, I didn't eat there, and the people were sort of rude, but no worse than what I've encountered at other Casinos. I'm going to Biloxi soon, though. I'm sure its better.

Agreed. Coushatta is pretty nice but I couldn't see myself spending more than a night there. I like to have other options besides the casino. For a day trip, it can't be beat.
 
I stayed a few days at Imperial Palace in Biloxi. Had a great time. All the casinos around there seemed fairly good. It's not Vegas, but it was still fun.

Tunica/Memphis is also relatively close and a great place to gamble.
 
i live in baton rouge louisiana. i would spend another 2 hours and drive to boloxi, they have some nice casinos there, beau revage(100% sure spelling is wrong) boomtown, grand, all those nice places
 
I'm in Shreveport. I find the casinos to be very depressing. I just hate to see all those old people giving the casinos their life savings. If you do go to a casino, then plan on losing your money.
