Well, I have heard this game be hyped time and again in CRPG circles, so I thought that I would buy it to find out what it is all about. Note that I have played other D&D games and Baldur's Gate I / II are in my top 5 video games.

My questions.
[*]Any "must have" unofficial fix packs, patches, or mods?
[*]Any way to get this game to run at 1024X768?
[*]The game came with "SoulBringer", a game that I have never heard of, is it any good?
[*]Anything else that I should know before I start playing?

thanks

1. http://www.planescape-torment.org/
2. Not to my knowledge
3. Never heard of Soulbringer either, check Gamespot, IGN, etc
4. I'd play through as a Mage, with high INT, CHR, and WIS. Even though you cannot be a priest in the game, having high INT, CHR, and WIS all allow you more dialogue options, open up more story paths, and generally make the game much more fun. The Brothel of Slating Intellectual Lusts is a blast with high INT, WIS, and CHR stats. I don't want to give away more of the story, but having those stats high will also allow you access to more endings.

Good advice. I'm in basically the same boat at Schadenfroh, I'm a HUGE BG I/II fan and ended up hearing about PS:T a few years late. Got it and going to play through it now.

Alright, installed the unofficial patch, and thanks for the warning about dialog options and your stats, I do like my dialog options. NWN2 should not take me much longer, going to fire this game up after I am done.

Best game of all time, IMO :)

Make sure to talk to your companions from time to time. As you progress, more dialogue options open when talking to them. There is some good story here, and other added "bonuses" for talking to them (won't give it away though :)).

Wisdom is probably the most important stat for dialogue, memory recovery (usually gives XP), and it also increases the rate at which you gain experience. Charisma even plays a role in dialogue, although not as frequently. The 'friends' spell is a great way not to have to spend points on charisma but still get all the charisma-based dialogue and benefits.

Keep in mind that other characters can also increase NO's stats, if you have the prerequisites. Some of the dialogue branches are also alignment-based, so the closer you are to the character's alignment, the more you get out of him/her. Unlike KotOR/NWN, you won't get confirmation messages when you gain/lose alignment points. You'll only know when your alignment actually changes.

I just installed it yesterday and started playing. Very good game so far.

One question for now though... Is it bad to die? I know you end up back on the slab, but are there disadvantages each time?

Sometimes dying is advantageous or even necessary. Don't want to spoil it so I'll leave it at that.

Otherwise, there are no disadvantages except that you have to go back to the morgue or another spawn point.

Nah, die as often as you want. Cept in certain areas, there its permanent. I'll let you find those on your own.

Dead contract? :p

If you have high enough skills, you can convince him to give you more.

I created my PC last night, but have not had a chance to play around with it. I see no class selection screen and his mage/priest books are grayed out, I assume that the PC can only be a fighter and that INT is just for dialog / memory recovery purposes?

Without spoiling too much - you always begin as a simple fighter, because that's what you are, a scarred n00b who just woke up with no memory.
thief\mage...you'll get to that :)

A word of advice - this is the only game I know where I would prefer very high charisma, intelligence and wisdom rather than strength and all that.
Dialogues in the game are VERY important.
Although you can still bash your way to the end :p

Alright, how do I do a full install? I have the 2cd version and it never asks me for a full install (reinstalled it twice to see if I missed the option) and it only asks for CD2 when I play the game (not during the install), is there any specific folder that I can copy the CD's root directories to in the PlaneScape folder to avoid having to load all of that stuff off the CDs each time?

Check the CD2DVD forums maybe?

I have the 4 CD version of the game, which does ask for a full install, if memory serves. It does still ask for CD switches though. To get around that, I use a noCD crack or images of the CDs mounted with Daemon Tools.

Figured it out, had to alter an .ini file and copy/paste the CDs to folders on my hard drive.... ahh the pre safedisc days.

Anywho, another quick question, is it possible to exchange saved games between two PCs? I know you cant in BG2.

You copying the save game files over to another PC with the game installed? I've done it with both Torment and BG2, not to mention IWD1 and 2 as well. Just need to make sure they are the same version and make sure the copied savs aren't checked read only.

Such an amazing game, make sure you talk to everyone as you never know what may come about, and there is a chance someone will remember you from a past incarnation. The game is very dialogue heavy, and you can literally spend hours upon hours of just talking to various people. Don't be afraid to explore every little nook and cranny either, as there are tons of secrets to uncover. Sometimes you might get yourself into some trouble poking about, but remember for the most part you'll just end up back in the mortuary. Save often too, your choices do have consequences ;). Be sure to join factions and complete their respective quests/tasks to get the most out of the story, and certain party members. You can join as many as you want, you simply have to leave whatever one you are currently in.

I would suggest for a first time play-through to train Nameless One as a mage (As soon as you find out how to do this). This will work well with, as others have already stated, focusing on high WIS and INT. The thief is an interesting playstyle, and you can actually get through the game with very few combat sequences, but missing out on the combat xp can make things difficult the first time through (though you can still kill just about anything if you want). Personally I never stayed as a fighter for very long, but if you do there are some pretty awesome weapons available (Some are alignment based however).

Every time I think about this game it makes me want to re-install and play through again.
