Don't parachutes always have a backup/spare chute? or is that just for people who intentionally jump out of planes, not necessarily emergency use..

I have a survival guide that tells what to do if there is only one chute for two people...it warns that the way you need to interlock the limbs/straps will likely result in painful breaks or dislocations but at least both in all likelihood should survive.

The human animal's ability to adapt to almost any conceivable situation means that I'd eventually get over it. It might haunt me and change me, but I'd be alive to deal with those emotions.

You could also argue that the true pain in this situation is felt by the one who survives, and that death is merciful.

I'm assuming, of course, that a tandem jump (which is what I'd actually attempt) is forbidden in the spirit of the thread.

I chose to give to spouse but for a more technical answer I'd just have her hold on to my back while I jump, and hope that the chute can handle two people. 😛
