It's been a while since I've seen Dell offer the PV174 Planar LCD for the $600 price tag. I'm finally in the market for an LCD, and I'm eyeing the Planar more than ever. Anyone know if they're going to offer the deal sometime this summer?

Don't buy it if you will want to play FPS games on it. I ended up calling them to return mine and ordered an NEC 1850X instead. It was good for windows desktop type stuff though.

I could also sell you mine for what I paid Dell ($639?) plus shipping of course.

I personally love my Planar 174 LCD monitor. I play Ghost Recon and Jedi Knight 2 on it without any problems.

I use my Planar 17.4" to play games like Quake3, Return To Castle Wolfenstein and so forth and it's great.

I love this monitor!

Hehe, you must be the only one :)

Like everyone else mentioned in this thread, I have NO problems with ghosting on my 18.1" Planar. I use a GF3 Ti200 w/DVI.

gunfighter,

I thought you said you returned your Planar?

<< I ended up calling them to return mine >>

But you said you could sell it?

Perhaps he thought there was a chance of recovering the $639 and couldn't resist that opportunity!....;)

I did return it... I'm just waiting on getting the shipping labels from Dell so that I can send it back... I'm sure I could change my mind, call Dell and tell them I wanted to keep it. Don't worry about it, less headaches all around if I just send it back to dell.

Ahh, I see.

For those of you with Planar monitors, could you answer something for me? How well does the PV174 scale down to 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions? I know some LCDs look really chunky when they scale down from 1280x1024, curious as to how well the Planar handles.

Thanks!

suprisingly well.
if youre doing gaming, think of it as free antialiasing.
I'd say it looks smooth rather than chunky.. (just tested it out now) imo, its very usable.

while i do see some ghosting when playing RTCW, it holds up pretty damn well for an LCD flat panel. as far as scaling, when i go to a lower resolution, the video is centered, which forces me to play all my games at 1280x1024. My Radeon AIW is starting to show its age. :(

you can change it so it stretches it to fullscreen in display proerties->settings->advanced->device selection->device adjustments

sorry cheif, i don't see device selection in the advanced display properties for my card. since i'm using the digital interface, i think it won't scale lower resolution to fit my screen.
