I got in on this a week ago and I'm looking at the monitor as I type right now. Just thought I'd let any potential buyers know that it's an absolutely beautiful monitor. Haven't tried any games on it yet, so I can't attest to ghosting, and honestly, I can't tell any difference between DVI and analog. Maybe I need to install the monitor drivers. But anyway, I'm very pleased with my purchase. This model is newer than the ADU/AZ that everyone was buying a month ago and is actually thinner than my 15" Dell LCD. Very light. I got it 10% off plus a $100 off coupon...total after Ebates came to about $670. :)

I may want to get this also...i bought the philips 15 inch from Staples for 170 or so after rebate...but now it looks like 1 of the rebate may not go thru...plus I don't want to pay 250 for a 15 inch when I can get this for 670 or so...actually less since someone is buying this for me.

But most importantly how does this monitor look on 800X600...is it really bad? Because my video card sucks so my games have to be played at low res. Plus I have old people need to use this with large text.

$100 off $400 purchase coupon that you can only get with a system purchase. My girlfriend recently got a laptop from them. I don't know about 800x600, but I would think that if you can spend $700 on a monitor you should really spend $80-150 to get a decent videocard. I just upgraded to an Radeon 8500.

Thanks for the explanation annihilator....

I am really thinking about picking one of these up tomorrow, $753 is still a darn good deal.

annihilator, could you possibly try a FPS game or three on it and post back with ghosting results? :)

I would be most appreciative as I am highly concerned about being able to play Unreal Tournament 2003 on it.... =) Thanks in advance man!

For anyone contemplating this monitor and Schnieds; I got this monitor a few days ago and it's an awesome display. I also have a Samsung 760v and it blows it away! I'm using the digital connection the text is sharp. I've been playing Unreal Tournament 2003 demo on it and all I can say is... WOW! I'm running 1280x1024 with all settings on max and it's incredible. Highly recommended!
I took the Samsung to work, but now I'm contemplating selling it and buying another one of this Planar for work.

Also, I'm the proud owner of a Planar PL191M-BK from Dell. I received mine about 1.5 weeks ago.

As far as gaming goes, I'm not a "first person shooter" game player. However, the games that I do have and do play (Driver, Dirt Track Racking, Dethkarz, Moto Racer, Need for Speed, etc.) all look very good on this monitor - and I can't detect any ghosting. Then again, the response time (rise + fall) is only 25ms.

Here's a picture of how this monitor appears on my desk: Link to my Planar PL191M-BK monitor

You must have ordered your monitor on Saturday / Sunday (Sept 14th or 15th) when the Dell site had this monitor for only $879.00 instead of $949.00 before discounts. Apparently, there was a pricing mistake on Dell's part where they priced the monitor at the same price point as the other Planar 19" monitor that they sell. I saved the monitor to my cart at this price, but on Monday (9/16/02), I went back to my cart to order the monitor, but I received an alert that the price had changed - back to $949.00. I contacted a Dell CS agent - who honored the $879.00 price - 10%, but not the $25.00 coupon that I had saved in my shopping cart - plus, I lost out on Ebates. However, the agent did upgrade my shipping to overnight for free. Plus, if I place my next two orders through this agent, the shipping will also be free.

When you look at the other monitors in this class, the Planar looks pretty impressive. While shopping for mine, I looked at the Viewsonic VX900 for $999 @ CompUSA, the KDS RAD-9 for $999 at the Micro-Center and the Samsung 191T @ CompUSA for $899. All three of the monitors that I looked at were good, but not worth the additional $200 to $300 more (plus tax) over the Planar that I purchased. Oh, my Planar didn't have any dead pixels - the monitors are shipped directly from Planar in Oregon for Dell. It appears that Planar has a pretty impressive quality control process compared to other vendors. I've read of some individuals getting Planar monitors with dead pixels, but the chance of this happening appears quite rare.

$100 off $400 purchase coupon? My cousin got new Dell system, and he did not say he got one?
Do you get an actual coupon? or does Dell know there is $100 off 400?

wje: 19in is working great, =) But this LCD looks so tempting.

I'm about to place the order tomorrow through business channels for substantial discounts. I missed out on the planar deal at 25% off last time, but I'm gonna get in on this one. I just hope it is not too bad at 800x600....

I'd be all over this if I had one of those $100 off coupons. (PM anyone :) )
I'll probably end up waiting until there's a deal down the line.

You won't get one of the $100 off coupons for free - unless you, or someone you know, purchased a system from Dell and received the coupon. However, you can find coupons *for sale* from time to time for an approximate cost of $25.00.

Like all other computer equipment, there's a good chance for future price drops. I'm sure we'll see additional price drops in the future for items such as this. However, Dell's promotions probably will not change - I'm sure we'll keep seeing the typical 10% to 15% off for items like this along with $25 or $30 *off* coupons which you can use in combination with the 10 or 15% off sales. Dell typically runs these sales on monitors and such about once a month.

I hear ya'. I was in the same boat - had a very good KDS 19" monitor with a Trinitron tube that looked absolutely fabulous. However, I needed more desk space and I was trying to decide whether to purchase a refurbished 21" for $250 - which would consume more desk space. Finally, a deal for this monitor came up, so I moved on it.

wje, out of curiosity, does the planar pl191m come with a DVI cable or just an analog VGA cable?

Both cables (DVI & analog) are provided. Additionally, the monitor comes with a USB cable and the external power brick. There is an included CD-rom with the monitor, but the CD doesn't contain any drivers for Windows XP. XP just recognizes the monitor as a "plug 'n play" monitor.

As mentioned above, the monitor includes a USB cable because there are 2 downstream USB ports built into the back of the monitor.

[Edit]: 9/30/02 - I forgot to mention before when I posted this information, but the package also includes one additional cable. The cable is an audio cable which goes between your sound card and the monitor - if you desire to use the built-in speakers with the monitor.

Well I just went ahead and bought one...

If you figure out the overall price of $753 over the normal price of $949 it comes out to be just about a 21% discount in price, which is pretty darn good. You might see a 23-25% deal if you are really patient, but the numbers are soooo close this is too good to pass up.

babyjayc... thanks for the review... it was much appreicated and affirmed the decision I made to go ahead and buy it earlier today...

Now to talk the wife into a Parhelia for my birthday.... ;)

Yeah, they had it priced the same as the ADU/AZ when they first got it. Lucky me. :)

It's a paper coupon that comes bundled with the system documentation. Looks like a one-page advertisement, but there's a coupon code for 100 off 400 at the top.

Also, no dead pixels on mine either. I don't play FPS's either, guys, sorry...yeah, yeah, I know, I'm letting this great monitor go to waste...but it is very nice for DVDs.

Just placed an order for this today.. but I'm curious.. Does "pixel pitch" matter a lot when it comes to LCDs? Is .294 too high?

LCD monitors and CRT monitors can not be directly compared (e.g. dot pitch vs. pixel pitch.) Nearly every 19" LCD monitor out there has a .29 pixel pitch rate. You can find 19" monitors with a .24/.25 pixel pitch, but their price is about $1400 - $1500. However, these monitors will also feature resolutions of 1600 x 1280 for mucho desktop space. I'll assure you that the .29 pixel pitch is more than fine for this monitor.

now the $25 off $200 stackable coupon is still alive.
Yeah, but there's a limit to the number of coupons that you can "stack" @ Dell. Since this monitor has a discount of 15%, that counts as one coupon. Then, you add in your $100 off coupon, that's a second coupon. You can't stack any other coupons into your cart at this point. I tried with both the $25 off coupon and the $30 off coupon - no go. You can only use the following: 15% off (default discount on this monitor) + the $100 off coupon (if you have one) and then go through E-Bates to make your purchase.
