The tittle says it all...

Link

or the Dell UltraSharp 1900FP, 19-inch Flat Panel LCD Monitor for $636
Link

Final prices after the 15% off and free shipping. I think the 15% off is good only till the 24rd. So order yourself 1 or 2 😉

Hope that this is not a re-post.

That's a nice monitor and a nice price too. 🙂 I wonder how much lower the prices are going to go on these things before something new comes out? I have a ViewSonic that I got a deal on last year ($800) from these boards and at that time that was cheap, but I love it though so it was worth it. Nice deal!

Just to be sure, which monitor?

The Planar or the Dell has the $30 rebate? I'm assuming you mean Planar since thats the topic of the thread, but hate to assume.

I need 3 of these.

The rebate applies to the Planar monitor. I'm not a heavy gamer, so I can't comment on the PL191M and ghosting. However, I will say that it's the best money I've ever spent on any computer product that I've purchased and I paid closer to $700 for mine last fall.

I sure would like to switch from my Planar CT1904Z to the PL191M.
Only difference is the smaller bezel, but it sure looks nicer with that smaller bezel.
Only problem is DEAD PIXELS. These Planars usually have plenty. My CT1904Z is one I got from Planar because the first two I got from Dell had too many, so they sent me this PERFECT CT1904Z which has not even 1 dead or weak pixel.

My wife has a Microtek branded version of the PL191M. It has a few dead pixels, but not enough to qualify for replacement.

Ah, what would I rather have, dead pixels and a smaller bezel, or no dead pixels and a big bezel.

Planar has one of the best replacment policies in the industry, from what I've researched and IMO. It's 3 years, and they'll replace with even 1 dead pixel. With many companies, the number is 8 dead pixels or more. Below is taken directly from their site:
Planar will consider repair or replacement of a monitor with 3 or more non-responsive sub-pixels, call our technical support line at 1-866-PLANAR1 (1-866-752-6271).
Note the phrase sub-pixel. A pixel is comprised of 3 sub-pixels (I believe), so if only one pixel goes out completely, that is 3 dead sub-pixels. And the best part is not only do they 2nd Day Air you a new display, but they also pay for the old display to be sent back during the entire 3 year period. Can't beat that!

I don't know about all of this for sure. I've never even owned a LCD, but I have a Planar PL191M-BK arriving tomorrow so I'll stop back by and give my opinion of it. Again, if you read the 2 page thread from the link I posted above, there are plenty of opinions on the Dell (which is a rebadge Samsung 191t) and the Planar.

Yeah, that sub-pixel thing is sort of tricky though.
1 bad SUB-pixel means when your screen is black, the pixel will be either stuck green, red, or blue, if the bad sub-pixel is stuck-on.
If a bad sub-pixel is stuck off, then if your screen is all white, the pixel will look green, red, or blue.

So to me, a bad sub-pixel is just as bad, if not worse, than a bad whole pixel.

I didn't differentiate between them when I got Planar to replace my CT1904Z, but thinking back, I don't think I've ever had an entire pixel out. It's always just subpixels either stuck on or off, or in one case, operating in reverse.

Planar does seem to have about the best replacement deal of any I've seen. I have the older 17.4 and it has none 🙂

Ghosting is UNACCEPTABLE when gaming. What a waste of money to have that happen after dropping all that scractch!

I don't notice any ghosting on my 19" flat panel when playing games.
Older games look like ass, but newer ones that support 1280x1024 modes look fantastic, much better than CRT IMO.

If you want no ghosting, you have to get an LCD with a 16ms pixel response time, and there are only a couple of them out there right now, both 17", with that quick of response time. The Planar PX171M and the Hitachi CML174...along with Hitachi's new follow up to the 174, the CML175. As far as I know through my research, there are no LCD's bigger than 17" that offer a 16ms or better pixel response time.....yet.

Thanks for that info. I was wondering about that but didn't want to do the research. I'm torn between the PX171M and the PL191M. Do I want faster response or bigger screen? Will I really notice the difference since I hardly ever play FPS games? I like games like C&C, Diablo II, pod racer (but didn't work on XP for me), and other racing games.

The deal at Dell is now dead (back to $693 in both Small Business and Home & Home Office sections), but you may be able to have your cake and eat it too after May 17th with a 19" display AND faster response time. If you check out this link:

19" Exceptional Performance PX191- Available May 17th, 2003,

it looks like Planar will be offering a 16 ms. response time 19" LCD at that time. While it doesn't give the specs on that page, the prefix of the model number is "PX" which is the prefix to the 16 ms. version of their 17" model.

They have the PL171M which is rated at a 25 ms. pixel response time like the PL191M 19" model, and the PX171M which is the 16 ms. version.

So if my assumption is correct, the PX191 they're bringing to market on May17th will probably (hopefully) be a 16 ms. version of their 19" LCD display.

Very cool! 🙂

you're nuts.) My 1900FP is awesome for gaming. I've never witnessed any ghosting, even in high speed gams like UT2003.

I'm waiting for 19" LDC monitors to support 1600x1200, and then I'll definitely jump in. I can't stand the low resolution right now.

I agree. My 1900FP is fine for games. 🙂 Man, if these drop another $100 soon, I may pick up another one. 🙂

There already are 19" monitors that support 1600x1200. Look at Planar's lineup, there's at least one.
You'll probably never find them in the mainstream, because the majority of people don't want such a high resolution.

Conscript...

FiLeZz is not nuts. Nor is anyone else that sees the ghosting/smearing on a 1900FP... or any brand 25+ ms. LCD for that matter. It's just that your eyes must not be as sensitive or responsive or as clearly focused or whatever you want to call it. You simply cannot play games on any LCD w/ a 25 ms. pixel response time or higher without the display producing some ghosting or smearing. A lot of people say "I don't see it" and that's fine...but it is there, and it is a proven fact of the technology. You didn't get lucky and get a sub 20 ms. response time 1900FP...that isn't how it works. You're eyes just don't notice it or pick it up.

No offense intended at all. And that's probably good that your eyes don't notice it. That way you don't have to justify blowing bigger bucks buying a faster pixel response time LCD. But for the people who's eyes can and do "witness" it, it's irritating and unacceptable.

Fluorescent lights don't bother a lot of peoples eyes in an office environment, but mine can detect the cycling of them and they drive my eyes crazy. That's why my office is lit with incandescent only. 😉

BTW... I've had my PL191M for 3 days now and there is ghosting/smearing. Depending on the game (NFS:HP2, RTCW, UT03, Doom3(alpha), JK2, BF1942) it's more noticeable than others, but I haven't found/played a single one yet that has absolutely none. And I know I won't with a 25 ms. pixel response time. I may send this back within 30 days and wait for the PX191.

But gaming aside, it is a quality LCD with a bright, vibrant, beautiful picture. And not a single dead pixel/sub-pixel. 🙂

If you search around and find the datasheet PDF for that monitor you'll see its listed at 25ms.
