Hey Cos,
Same story as you. I ordered yesterday in the morning and never got a confirmation email from them.
But lo and behold today at lunch this lovely new LCD panel showed up. Definately worth $585 and
it is generating serious techno-lust from my co-workers.
Couple of thoughts for anyone who is sitting on the fence on this one:
The thing about "native resolution" is no joke. With Win2k and font smoothing on (haven't tried
XP's ClearType yet) 1280x1024 looks fantastic, but higher resolutions look awful, and lower
resolutions look really odd. Your eyes think it is blurry even though it isn't. And woe to you if you
run it at an odd aspect ratio like 1280x768: crapola city. Games are a different story, of course. I
am just talking about desktop and apps like DevStudio/Office.
The "Pivot" feature is not quite what I expected. You manually twist the monitor, but you must
then use some software called Pivot Pro to turn your desktop. I figured it might be automatic.
The base interferes with the pivot so you must tilt up before you pivot. Also, the stops on mine
are a little off, so if I pivot all the way it is slightly tilted, which means a little fiddling around to
get it exactly level. I will probably not switch it much.
17.4" is not small. This thing is much bigger and heavier (weighted base) than I was expecting. I
have it next to a 21" dell monitor and the screen looks almost as big. If you measure, there is only a 2"
difference in the diagonal size of the viewing area. The 21" is about 1/2" taller and 2-3" wider, but
it really "feels" like it is the same size. If you want big, but don't need CRT, this is a very good alternative.
If you aren't used to 1280x1024 resolution, you will probably squint for a bit. I was running at
1152x864 and it is taking a little getting used to for my crummy eyes. I can't decide if I want to
move closer or further back.
No word yet on what a DVI-capable card will improve, but it looks pretty nice with analog from a
M64 TNT2 card.
The OSD has as its first option Auto-Adjust to configure to whatever resolution you are running. This
is a nice feature and works better than on any CRT I have used. You can also change the color temp
if you are so inclined. There are hot and cool presets, or user defined.
No word on the ghosting yet. I suspect I won't notice it, and from all the other messages I read I
think it is more dependent on the person than the LCD as to if it is a problem.
That's about it for now.
