Well, I came home from work, and my new LCD panel was waiting for me. The panel itself is very clean looking. The pics on their website really don't do it justice. I figure it'd look best in a CEO's office.

Anyway, I hooked the thing up w/ the included DVI cable to my MSI GeForce3 Ti 200, and away I went! The text is extrordinarily crisp, and the display is very easy on the eyes. I must admit, that using the landscape mode of the monitor for the first time is kindof unsetteling, but I REALLY have begun to like it.

I'm not a hard core gamer, so the only FPS I have on my PC right now is Return to Wolfenstein. While running thru a bit of the game, I didn't initially notice any ghosting, although at one point I stopped playing the game and did nothing but move the mouse around furiously. When I did this, I was finally able to see quick glimpses of what ghosting is, but I can tell you that if some people move around so fast in multi player games that they see this, they're doing way better than I could ever hope to do. Just let me know who you play as so that I know not to play with you. :)

All in all, I'd rate this as an EXCELLENT monitor, and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't hesitate for a second.

Yea, I looked at the ones at best buy...

The extra $90 for the Planar got me:

- DVI connector
- pivoting screen
- an extra .4" viewable
- a higher quality MVA panel with fast (25ms) response time
- a 3 year, 2nd day air swap warranty

and, of course, the for-marketing-purposes built in speakers & usb hub.

Thanks, but I'll stick with the Planar.

Ordered one the other day. Think i will dump my KDS Rad-5 on ebay to offset the cost. BTW, the RAD-5 has absolutely NO ghosting except if you wiggle the mouse real fast like mentioned earlier. I did the ultimate test: Quake1 timedemo1 and there was not tearing or blurring. Great monitor. The Planar with a faster response time will be stunning! I cant wait!

Although the system reports an error when you apply the 15% Small Business code, it changes the discount amount from $65 to $98 and allows you to check out. I think the error popup is the Dell system removing the 10% discount. So the system is smart enough not to allow stacking, but also smart enough in our favor to use the better coupon.

My sales tax bumped the price up by $25, but hey that saved another $8! Final price was $585ish.

I have this LCD and love it. I'm not a hard core gamer but I do play things like mechwarrior at 1280x1024 and I don't see any issues with ghosting / refresh.

I got this from Dell last time they had the deal.

Enjoy it...

Actually, if I had to do it over again, I'd get 2 RAD5s instead of a single Planar 17.4. I myself have a Planar 17.4 and I did a system build for a friend that included a RAD5. I'm totally impressed with the RAD5.

Although it's analog, it's incredibly thin and has no detectable ghosting. The tradeoff between analog and digital is marginal, and the RAD5 more than makes up for it with less ghosting, thinner panel, wider viewable angle, and no "wrinkle effect" in the corners.

Don't sell your RAD5 short, it's an awesome monitor.

IshmaelLeaver, Is the Planar 17.4" a lot thicker than the KDS? I assumed it was an ultra-thin monitor like my RAD5. Now im getting worried. Maybe i should have got a KDS RAD7? Either way, i absolutely must have a bigger screen than 15". Are you also saying that there might be ghosting on the Planar? eek!

I got the black pivot 17.4 Planar 2 weeks ago, and it is awesome. I use the DVI connection to my Geforce 3 Ti200 card. Everything is so sharp in native 1280 x 1024 resolution. No ghosting at all with the game I am playing (Dark Age of Camelot). The only complain I have are

1. One dead pixel (actually it is not dead but always on.. kind of a cyan color) I don't notice it anymore though
2. Worthless speakers. The 2 built in speakers are totally worthless. You probably get better sound by connecting a walkman headphone and turn the volume all the way up.
3. 800x600 resolution is kind of blurry

Just received mine about 2 hours ago - I've been testing it out - playing several games, and haven't noticed any ghosting. I'm completely impressed. Very glad I made the switch from my 19" trinitron to this.

Someone asked for pictures - here's a few:

Is the Planar 17.4" a lot thicker than the KDS?

Yes, the Planar is 2-3 times as thick as the KDS.

Are you also saying that there might be ghosting on the Planar

A very small amount. The KDS has less ghosting, but you won't be unhappy with the performance of either.

Don't get me wrong, the Planar is great; probably better than the RAD7, but if I had to do it over again, I'd get two RAD5s for the same price.

I'm really wrestling with the one Planar vs the 2 RAD5s. I built a machine to use at work and have a RAD5 as its monitor, and I couldn't be more pleased with the quality. Don't know about ghosting while gaming or anything, but the quality of the colors, contrast, and text with Cleartype in XP is amazing considering I paid $250 after rebate for it. On my home dual monitor set-up, I'd like to get a higher res primary monitor like the PLANAR 17.4" and probably another RAD5, or I could just get 2 RAD5s for the price of the one Planar. Decisions, decisions.

Hey Cos,
Same story as you. I ordered yesterday in the morning and never got a confirmation email from them.
But lo and behold today at lunch this lovely new LCD panel showed up. Definately worth $585 and
it is generating serious techno-lust from my co-workers.

Couple of thoughts for anyone who is sitting on the fence on this one:
The thing about "native resolution" is no joke. With Win2k and font smoothing on (haven't tried
XP's ClearType yet) 1280x1024 looks fantastic, but higher resolutions look awful, and lower
resolutions look really odd. Your eyes think it is blurry even though it isn't. And woe to you if you
run it at an odd aspect ratio like 1280x768: crapola city. Games are a different story, of course. I
am just talking about desktop and apps like DevStudio/Office.

The "Pivot" feature is not quite what I expected. You manually twist the monitor, but you must
then use some software called Pivot Pro to turn your desktop. I figured it might be automatic.
The base interferes with the pivot so you must tilt up before you pivot. Also, the stops on mine
are a little off, so if I pivot all the way it is slightly tilted, which means a little fiddling around to
get it exactly level. I will probably not switch it much.

17.4" is not small. This thing is much bigger and heavier (weighted base) than I was expecting. I
have it next to a 21" dell monitor and the screen looks almost as big. If you measure, there is only a 2"
difference in the diagonal size of the viewing area. The 21" is about 1/2" taller and 2-3" wider, but
it really "feels" like it is the same size. If you want big, but don't need CRT, this is a very good alternative.

If you aren't used to 1280x1024 resolution, you will probably squint for a bit. I was running at
1152x864 and it is taking a little getting used to for my crummy eyes. I can't decide if I want to
move closer or further back.

No word yet on what a DVI-capable card will improve, but it looks pretty nice with analog from a
M64 TNT2 card.

The OSD has as its first option Auto-Adjust to configure to whatever resolution you are running. This
is a nice feature and works better than on any CRT I have used. You can also change the color temp
if you are so inclined. There are hot and cool presets, or user defined.

No word on the ghosting yet. I suspect I won't notice it, and from all the other messages I read I
think it is more dependent on the person than the LCD as to if it is a problem.

That's about it for now.

For what it's worth, I haven't seen any emails confirming my order placed Weds. morning either. When I called Dell, they said it wasn't on their system but that it could take 24-48 hrs. to show up. Checked the Amex Blue and didn't see a charge.... So I guess I'll wait another day.

Anyone have any ideas why the black one is cheaper? Black LCD are usually more expensive because they look all executive.

Anyone know if you can order the black one and switch to a white one but without paying the difference? If they are shipped from Planar directly right Planar shouldn't care.. Any ideas?

Thanks.

They probably have more blacks in stock. I called Dell after getting my black PV174 requesting I wanted a beige instead of black. They had me send the LCD back for a credit then I had to reorder myself. Now the price of the black drops $40. It would look stupid if I ordered another black. I really wanted the white one. No, I'm not racist. ;)

I also submitted my order yesterday afternoon. It has been approximately 24 hours and I have not received a confirmation email as of yet.
I'll probably just wait and see if I get it. If I don't I'll just wait untill the next deal. It might even be better, you can never tell.

Maybe someone besides Borealis will get a positive sign too.

I ordered one yesterday and I had a FedEx tracking number around 1:30PM today.
Hope I will be happy with this LCD. Using a Samsung 955DF from the last Dell deal.
Has anyone tried playing any video with this yet?, I can?t wait to try it out.
