Places to search for puppies

I am on a Valentine's Day mission to find a Dachshund puppy for my GF.

Anyone have recommendations on places to look? I'm in central MD, if that helps at all.

Oh don't worry, I've made sure she's ready. It won't be a surprise b/c I've asked her so many times if she's sure she wants one. She had a Beagle live with her for 5+ years that she helped take care of, so she should be good to go.

I would say the animal shelter as well, there are so many dogs and cats out there that need a home and people still go to pet stores and may a mint for these dogs.

Yeah we've both been looking feverishly for a Dachshund (or even a mix) in a shelter but haven't had much luck.

This has actually become one of the most painful ways of getting a dog. When I wanted a dog, I called up all the local shelters, humane society, etc. They had me filling out all sorts of forms and wanting to do background checks before I even got to see a dog 🙁

I found a puppy mill just down the road, paid $100 and walked out 15 minutes later with a pup.



To the OP:
If you are getting a doxy, make sure you know what you are getting into. They are lil bastards! Mine is a year old and while I love her, she is a terror. She has finally learned how to sit and occasional comes when you call her name. If you leave the door open too wide, she is off to the races. About once a month she decides to munch on a shoe. Then there is the fact that she stalks the cats.

They are little balls of energy. They are also cuddle monsters. I don't mind her constantly having to be on my lap but some people get annoyed by it.
 
check the front page of your local newspapers website...ours (www.pbpost.com) has a "Find a Furry Friend" section that links to 5 or 6 adoption agencies in the area all with pics of the pets.

Pretty nice feature.

Buying a pet for someone is a bad idea in general though...it's best to surprise them by bringing them to the place and finding out if they are committed. It sounds like she doesn't have her own place either. Helping to care for a pet is a lot different than having one, esp when 100% of the finances for the care of that pet are there.


NSFW: there is a pretty good reason why adoption agencies are strict and likewise why mills could give a shit if you are buying the pet to kill if it fancied you. By catering to the mills you are perpetuating their existance. There is already too many pets out there.

I understand that. I also understand that I got a pup complete with papers, happy and healthy with very little effort. I tried going the PC way first, but that system failed.
 
They are awesome dogs. My fiancee and I have two. I never thought I'd like little dogs, but they are awesome. Very smart but also very stubborn sometimes.
 
Papers don't mean much especially when they come from puppy mills. Your dog is also a year old so bad breeding/health problems may take awhile to show up. Of coarse going with a shelter dog you don't know how good the breeder was either. Thats why I like mutts.

Papers don't mean much unless you are a breeder as well or going to show and then it's doubtful you will find any top quality dog for less then into the 4 figures or 5.

Most health issues can be identified early on by a vet. With a dog though it's more disposition you are looking for.
 
I love mine and he's different than most, he is a lazy fucker. Sleeps all day. He'll get up and play but if you don't get him up he would just lay they around.
