Places to buy hard drives in quantity (200+)

Hey all,

I need to buy a bunch (about 200) of 2TB hard drives, ideally Hitachi or similar 7200 RPM style. The WD Green / other 5200 / variable RPM speed drives don't handle multitasking well, and cause performance issues for my application (multiple simultaneous video encodes)

Can any one suggest a place to buy a bunch at once and get a good price?

You can also contact Newegg Business. They might be willing to deal on such a huge quantity. Another place to try is eWiz (retail arm of a distributor).

really depends on what you are using to pay. credit card eats up 3% so tack that on to the price. and availability and whether you will RMA bad product direct to manuf or need support. lastly is the fraud aspect. If you pay on terms of Credit card - that is a heavy fraud flag for a non-established account.

typically the 20-packs are broken up by (newegg) to sell single.

You should start looking at the 1.5TB platters - at 7200rpm you might have more luck.

Also make sure you negotiate if you have a liftgate at your place of work or not when the LTL truck delivers your 200 drives - it costs extra to delivery to business without a liftgate unless you want to drag a pallet of drives inside with a buddy.

if you live in the bay area ewiz is a great idea cause they're located out of san jose i believe. Fry's generally has that kind of stock (call first its usually less than 200) of a single drive at any one time. the palo alto store has a database software company a few doors down and when i worked in sales there i sold them drives typically 40-50 at a time several times while they were setting up shop quite regularly. if you are located near one of these stores you can sometimes set up deals with the sales supervisors or manager if you are buying a large enough quantity of drives, but you gotta push em really hard or come in on a good day. mention up front the possibility of future purchases. this is specific to the palo alto staff at least, idk how malleable the other stores are on pricing but i've saved that business a few doors down a few grand this year helping em strike a deal with my old supervisors. not a lot thus far but it adds up as a small start up
