Places to buy desks beside Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples?

I went around today looking for a new desk. Specifically I'm looking for an L-shaped desk (not a glass top) that is not wobbly, but not expensive fancy office quality.

Any suggestions for places to shop other than Office Max, Office Depot, and Staples?

Where are you from? Surely there are small furniture shops in your area. Support your local economy!

With the economy, there should be plenty of office liquidations. Google is your friend.

Also, local advertiser mags and (ugh) CraigTits.

Well I'm trying to stay in the laminated Office Max quality price range. $200-ish or less

Another vote for craigslist in that case. I just bought a good size laminate corner desk for $50.

This...or used furniture stores...or used office equipment/furniture stores.

As businesses liquidate, you can often get a good deal on used office furniture.

BTW, Costco usually sells the laminated type of office furniture as well:

No telling what your local store will have in stock, but they USUALLY have something with a desk, hutch, and return. Either "L" shaped or "U" shaped.

Go to WalMart, they sell some decent quality desks. I wouldnt call them excellent, but better than you would expect.

If you're not far from Berkeley, CA you could try the Berkeley Outlet. It's not far from Orchard Supply near the freeway off Ashby Avenue. They have all kinds of used office furniture. I got one desk there. I'm also right now sitting on a high quality Case chair that I bought there used.

My best desk is one I got from my last full time job. I overheard them discussing having an outside company come and take away two of their desks. They were just giving them away. One was the CEO's desk (kind of big for me, but real nice) and the other one was in an administrator's office. It too was beautiful. I piped up and they said if I can take it away, it's mine. I got a friend to lend me her truck and I'm sitting at it now. Really, really nice spacious natural wood desk, with smooth drawers... and Free!

ikea.

they have a lot more options in their stores than online (or it seems like it, at any rate, when you've got a hundred desks right in front of you)

I think that's their new slogan: Walmart. Slightly Better Than You Would Expect.

Really, what are other stores going to have that the major office chains aren't already carrying anyway?

I guess you could go right to the source for that level of furniture (Bush, O'Sullivan, Sauder, etc.) and find a store that carries the model you're interested in.

Different stores have different shapes and sizes.

I want an L-shape desk (without extra ledges and crap attached) made out of wood (cheaper laminated particle, not expensive real wood) and it needs to be solid. So far, I have not found that desk.

I found such a desk at Office Max about 4 years ago. HUGE L-shaped desk. Cheap particle board with laminate. Solid as a rock. $149.

Hmmm, well a bit above the price range but I use Bush Corsa Collection at my company. A basic straight desk with a return added on to make the L ran about $350 last time we bought. No shelves or anything attached, 1" thick top surface so very solid, only downside is the joint between the desk and return comes with only a single bracket, I add more for better stability. And of course, it is above the stated price range, but it's solid stuff anyway.
