As I've slowly found out the past couple of years, I've been buying CD's and ripping them and then just storing the CD. So I'm starting to just buying the mp3's legit from the artist, with certain exceptions where I'd like to have the physical CD.

I've been trying to look for a place where I can purchase mp3's without having to install software (For example the Amazon Downloader). Not because I don't want to, but I don't want to end up having 5 different programs on my machine because not every place has a particular album. Plus I think it's silly that I have to do that to get something I bought legally.

An example of what I'm looking for is 7digital.com. You buy the album, and right after payment you simply get a list of the mp3's and you can right click and save the files directly:

Unfortunately, 7digital is a UK site, and the exchange rate is killer (but the only place I was able to buy that particular album). I'm now looking to buy the new Ladytron album. Does anyone know of any U.S.-based sites that allow you to purchase the mp3's without having to install software, similar to 7digital?

Thanks

I bought MP3's from Amazon already; I don't recall having to download a program. Is that IE only? I'm using Firefox, if that matters.

It was awhile ago though, maybe my memory's just rusty.

I don't think eMusic and CDBaby require software. Both focus more on indie/unsigned artists, though; if you're looking for more mainstream music good luck. It's hard enough to find download services that aren't plagued by DRM, let alone ones that offer plain old download links and don't require any software. I just stick with CDs, it's not like it's that hard to find closet space to store them.

Jeff7: With Amazon, software isn't required for single-track downloads, but for albums their download manager needs to be used.

I use Amazon since they've got no DRM on their MP3's. Just use my browser to DL them too. No software needed. Although I guess you need software for the albums according to FrostedFlakes. I've only bought single tracks from them, or downloaded single tracks with the pepsi points.

I use Amazon and I had to install a downloader. I use FF for my browser.

Well I'm pretty sure the downloader is required for albums. I'll admit I haven't used Amazon's service, though, this is just based on what I read a few months back. Who knows, they may have changed things since I last looked into it.

The Amazon downloader is pretty simple, it's not like you need a big bloated app like iTunes or Rhapsody. Plus the MP3s are DRM-free. That's who I use, they're cheaper than a lot of the other big places too.

That's correct, the downloader is required for albums, not required for single songs.

Amazon.com is great for downloading one off singles that you can't find... 'elsewhere'
