Pixel pitch, 1 or 2 foot away?

I'm trying to pick out a 1920x1080 LCD monitor. I looked at the Ars Technica system guide, and they recommended a 27" ASUS VE276Q.

I like the idea of having a large monitor, but the pixel pitch seems rather high (.311). An adviser of mine has an Apple Cinema display, and the sharpness of it was amazing. There's no way I can afford a $1k display, but I feel like I might want a better pixel pitch.

I sit about 1 to 2 feet away from my monitor. I'm wondering if maybe I should step down to 24", 23" or even 21.5", staying at 1920x1080, so I can have a smaller pixel pitch.

Any recommendations?

At that distance, you're probably going to want pitches in the .23 or less ranges. You'll probably want a 1920x1200 24" (.23-ish), or a 1920x1080 23" (.21-ish). I find a 1920x1200 24" at that range is borderline too large on the pitch, while the 1920x1080 23" was "just right" in terms of pitch (though I missed the 16:10 aspect ratio).

Right now the Dell U2711 is on my list, or maybe the U3011 since I'm now sitting a bit further away from the system so the reduction in pixel pitch might be a bit much. Either way I'm just biding my time for a sale 😛 OH, and for a direct monitor recommendation, I'd go with the Dell U2311 or U2411, unless you specifically want a glossy surface or a limited budget.

Thanks for the tip.

The U2311 is a bit out of my price range, and it's an IPS panel, so the response time seems like it might be too slow for my needs (gaming and academic work).
