If they got away from Disney, that sounds like the possibility of them making more darker themed or adult movies. Like an action movie or something like that final fantasy movie... except good.

My understanding is that Pixar partnered with Disney to distribute its films and assume some of the financial risk of the films. That is one reason for the large percentage of gross that Disney is entitled to in their contract. Of course after a few great successes it became apparent that Pixar would be far stronger that previously thought. The other major upside of the Disney deal for Pixar is the power that Disney wields in film distribution, trust me when I tell you that it is very significant.

Once the contract expires with Disney they could either negotiate a better contract with Disney or start talking to other distributors that would like to handle the films (ex: FOX, New Line, Sony, Paramount, Warner Brothers or anyone else) for a more acceptable cost. Another option would be to do their own distribution. I do not think they would choose this path because of the costs involved and the small number of films that they make.

There was an article in Barrons about Pixar.

More than likely Pixar will stay with Disney. The cost for starting distribution for another company would be pretty harsh, plus Pixar probably wouldn't get the 100% gross that they're planning on negotiating with Disney.

Don't think that Pixar is gonna go out of business anytime soon or anything. Steve Jobs originally held the rights to pixar and sold them to Disney for like, 50 grand or something low like that. Now they are worth just over a billion I think. Considering the whole MacIntosh thing, Steve Jobs is the worst businessman in perhaps the dumbest businessman in the world. ;)
Pixar was started by George Lucas and sold to Steve Jobs for $10 Million. The company went public a few years ago and Jobs is now the CEO.

Damn, that's right, I thought it was Jobs that sold it to Disney.

There is no way Eisner will let them have 100%, Disney isn't gonna put their name on any film even as just the distributer without a significant percentage of gross. If Pixar is commited to 100% they aren't going with Disney.

It depends whether Disney can land a portion of the auxiliary revenues, for example, toys, merchandising, DVD rentals/sales, etc.

Disney's theatrical animated department has been performing so poorly lately that I think they're mightily incented to try to keep Pixar on board.

They've gotten all the use from Disney that they needed... now it's time to ditch them... good for Pixar.

Jobs and Eisner hate each other.

Rumor is that Jobs wants Eisner's position at Disney (which would be a good move for Disney, IMO). Eisner is like a roman emperor who kills off all potential rivals for the throne. Hopefully they can learn to co-exist.

Once upon a time I'd have voted for Lucas to buy back pixar and make some quality stuff, but not after what he's done with the greatest movie franchise of all time.

agreed.. their executive vp john lasseter (sp?) is as creative as anyone at disney. i think nemo was the first movie that he actually took full director's responsibilities on. there was a real good special on 60 minutes II about pixar.. summary here. anyways, disney needs pixar a lot more than pixar needs disney these days.

Finding Nemo was directed by Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich. I believe Lasseter's sole feature-length directing credit is the original Toy Story.

another thing, i really get a kick out of this.. quoted from lasseter in his 60 minutes interview:

?There was a little boy standing at the gate with his mother, waiting for his dad to get off the airplane. He was holding a doll of Woody the Cowboy and clutching it. The look on his face was something so special. I realized by the look on his face that that was his doll, that was his character,? says Lasseter.

?Woody didn't belong to me anymore. And I think about that boy almost every day in working with these films, because I realize they're like a child of yours that you raise. And when they graduate high school and they go off to college, you're giving your child to the world. And you hope you did a good job raising them. That's what these films are like to us. You know??

Executive producer. I believe that's been his role for their last few releases, as well as the English dub of Spirited Away.

Ummm... The Incredibles is NOT going to be Pixar's last movie with Disney. There's one more coming out afterwards that is simply titled "Cars." Link

Eisner is too big of an ego-maniac. I sincerely doubt that he would take a deal that was less than 25% for Disney even if they got all the merchandising.

That's sad. I'll bet Disney is waving some FAT money in front of Pixar. Everyone of their movies released under Disney has done extremely well. Disney could easily afford to give Pixar as much $$ as Pixar wants if it means keeping them on.
i hope they do!
