It's a tragedy that a company with a history like Disney seems to desperately want to be out of the animation business.

This was Disney's deal to lose and they blew it.

The original deal with Pixar was very favorable to Disney because Pixar was unproven. Someone at Disney better be on fvcking crack for letting this happen. Disney's in house animation has preformed badly for the last few years. Pixar's films have been consistantly good performers, including Finding Nemo which is now the highest grossing animated film of all time.

Excellent work Disney.

I think part of Pixar's terms was insistence on full creative control and a significant portion of box office takings. Their last contract included solely a flat compensation, not a percentage of ticket sales.

I don't remember the exact numbers anymore, but the last three Pixar movies returned two times the profit as the past five or six Disney movies. I will try and find the article I read, but the point is just that Pixar doesn't need Disney's backing anymore. They not only have quality products, but now they have the credibility and consumer confidence necessary to make it on their own. Too bad for Disney...

Disney chief financial officer Thomas Staggs said the company rejected Pixar's "final offer" because it would have cost Disney hundreds of millions of dollars it is entitled to under the existing agreement "while not providing sufficient incremental returns on new collaborations to justify the changes to the existing deal."

So Disney basically was was saying either we have total ownership of the your idea (for free) or we won't deal at all. So either any revenue from academy award nominated and winning movies or none, and they choose none. And it also frees Pixar from having their ideas (storyline and characters) pimped out to other Disney related things.

I bet Roy Disney is laughing his ass off right now. Pixar has two more movies in the pipeline on contract to Disney, so this year's revenues won't be off. So basically Disney has 10 months to rev up their animation studios to try and out-Pixar Pixar next year.
