Big Dogs are scary. They can attack at any time.
Good thing about small dogs is that even if they try to attack, you can manage it. (Kick it out of the way if it tries to bite).

I hate those Killer Dogs. They're instincts are evil, etc. A friend of mine had a Dobermann since the dog was a puppy. One day, the dog just snapped and attacked someone although the dog was threated VERY good by my friend. It's just their instincts to attack.

Actually as I understand it, the problem with Dobbies is their brain keeps growing long after their skull stops growing. This can sometimes cause them to just "loose it".

Well, that's just my conception of those dogs. They might just snap one day and they will rip you apart. Who cares if a Poodle bites you? They won't kill you but the fight dogs CAN kill you. I know that I'm stereotyping but there's a reason for that stereotype.

I'll never own a pitbull. This isn't because I don't believe that they can be trained to be 'nice', it's just that I will never own an animal that could potentially kill me at any given time. This is obviously not limited to just pit bulls.

good post. i agree 100%. ppl dont realize that most of the time, owners are to blame for the aggressive behavior their dogs display.

I don't own a pit bull but I have had a full blooded chow (she died of old age when I was in the Persian Gulf during Op Desert Storm) and I now have a dog that is half chow. Chows are often maligned as are other potentially aggressive dogs but in my experience neither dog has been overly aggressive with anyone, friend or stranger. It's all in the training and attention you give your pet.

Even a docile lab (who doesn't love a lab?) can be a ferocious terror if it is not raised properly.

I currently have a Pit-mix and a Rott-mix. Both are sweet as can be.

I used to have a Rott-St.Bernard mix that ran 200lbs and scared the SH!T out of people. Worst he'd ever do was lay on you and drool.

heh we had a mastiff-rott mix. talk about a big dog.

But it was soo nice. he was the same the worst he would ever do is drown you in drool.

I'm just curious why pitbulls are getting the bad press, not German Sheperds or Rottweilers. There's an expression "Where there's smoke there's fire".

Because if trained to be, they can be very dangerous dogs, as opposed to say, a shih tzu. And so idiots who do this will generally pick a pitbull. They can be just as sweet and loving as any other dog if brought up right.

And again back to the point. Some Insurance companies who's job it is to asses risk have made the determination that if you have a pit bull that you can't purchase insurance from them. In the real world pit bulls frequently attack people, more so than any other dog. This may as you assert have something to do with training, but if true is an indicator of the people that get the dogs as much as it is the dogs themselves. Statistically pitbulls are much more dangerous, to the point that certain insurance companies will drop you if they find out you have one.

A friend of mine has a gorgeous pitbull puppy (~ 4 months old). Good lord, that thing is sweet. He hasn't ever even barked at a human, or another dog for that matter. I swear the thing's got ADD, though. It'll spaz and jump around, run into a room, look around, and forget why it went there. Either that, or you'll play with it for a bit, then it'll turn away, forget you're there, then turn back around and be like, "holy s**t, you're still here?! Cool! Let's play."

As far as "genetics" or whatever goes, I've always been under the impression that pit bulls are instinctually lead towards being aggressive against other dogs, not humans. But yes, I'm sure smaller dogs go psycho all the time...it's just that when a pit bull does it, there's gonna be some damage. Probably why those events get more coverage and such.

Big dog plus imperfect training = dead or maimed child.

Poodle plus imperfect training = drop-kicked poodle.

I'd agree with you more if you pit bull owners needed to pass a short course on proper training, and possibly have your dog checked periodically by a professional (for behavior rather than health).

Pit bulls should be considered dangerous until proven otherwise given the lack of required owner training, and their reputation is deserved even if the fault is in their owners.

I've owned 3 English Bull Terriers (the grand daddy of the Pit bull) & they are a loving loyal dog.

They will also tear any other living creature a new a$$hole if they get pissed off. & I have the vet bills from stitching together Rotweillers & Dobermans to prove it.

They've since passed away & I just don't have the time to devote to one right now, but they will remain my all time favorite breed.

They requite lots of attention & are quite territorial, and if someone messes with them, be it dog, human, rock, edger (you should have seen the scars the edger caused when my bitch attacked it🙁) they will finish the fight.

Mine never lost a fight.

Yep... "He wouldn't hurt anyone.."

Sure. Until one day, for no reason, he just SNAPS and mauls some kid to death.

Thats where the media usually leaves out the rest of the story. Tons of people have been attacked by pitdogs for hurting the dog, but the media seems to love to leave that out. Especially the ones who refuse to fight, then the owner tries to burn it to death.

All said and done, the only reason why people get them is BECAUSE of the hype surrounding them. Homeys always got be havin' dat dawg.

Those bull terriors are so damn ugly. I'd run from them not because they're ferocious, but more so cuz they're ugly.

my sister has 2 pit bulls, 1 male 1 female, they are the nicest dogs i have ever known

the male doesnt even bark at other dogs when they bark at him, he looks at them kinda funny and walks off

I have some friends with pits, they are nice dogs because of the owners.

I was almost killed by a pitbull when I was 8. Too bad it didn't finish the job.
