Pitbull Problem/Question

I just adopted a baby pitbull, it's 3 months old. I've had it for 2 days now and haven't been able to take it to the vet to get its basic vaccinations yet. I feel like the dog breathes weird cause it is breathing a little faster than normal i think. Also, the baby hasn't even barked yet except when we left it alone and it made a little sound. Does anyone know if its sick? Do baby pits normally act like this? It also sleeps a lot...please help with ne input. thanks!

She's a beauty and she's extremely nice to all people. she has yet to even try and bite someone, she's just nibbling...i could never imagine her doing that. also, please read about pitbulls before you make general assumptions. it's all about how they are raised, just like children.

Is his nose wet? IIRC, his nose will be dry if he's running a fever. That would be the first sign of a problem.

That's what most pitbull owners say and then something like THIS happens. The Police should have shot all three of the dogs. Hopefully charges will be filed on the childs parents.

All dogs pitbulls or not should be chained or in a fenced yard. My neighbors dogs run all over the damn neighborhood and coming into my yard. No one has any idea what diseases
they might pick up and drop off in my yard. I am now getting a fence put up around my yard to keep the little $%^$#@ out.

yes thats the problem, people confusing dogs with PEOPLE!! of course its nice to your own family, thats how their instincts work, they protect their pack and submit to all those it see's as above it in pack status. you won't see that switch flip to viscious bloodlust yourself, someone else will when it gets out somehow. train as you will, its still a cr@p shoot, some are just genetically predisposed to biting.

Although Pit Bulls have gained a bad reputation for their seemingly aggressive behavior, this breed can be the ideal pet for the right owner. Pit Bulls crave attention and are very loyal and loving toward people.

Other dogs, on the other hand, tend to bring out the aggressive behavior of the Pit Bull. Contrary to the image that they have in the media, Pit Bulls can be great with children. In general, Pit Bulls love people, especially children. The most common problem associated with Pit Bulls and children is that Pit Bulls are extremely energetic and they have a tendency, in their excitement, to knock young children over, puppies especially have a tendency for this.

In General, this breed is very easy to socialize with humans and is typically a great deal of fun to have around. Many Pit Bulls exhibit superior performance when it comes to obedience training and physical activities such as Frisbee and playing ball. For these reasons, Pit Bulls should not be overlooked when selecting a pet if you have what it takes to care for this special breed.

The one factor about Pit Bulls which you & the article linked to mentioned is that they were bred for a long time to fight other dogs, with these dogs in particular its very important to know the history of the dogs bloodline & to buy from a reputable breeder who keeps accurate records. In pure-bred pit-bulls human aggression is actually very rare because any dog that showed aggression towards a human was immediatly killed & often in front of the other dogs, human aggression in pit bulls is a recent development caused by breeding with other large & aggressive breeds combined with dogs that are trained to attack.
The American Kennel club, who IMO knows more then most about dogs rates the pit bull as one of the best & most loyal family pets & a great choice for families with children and this jibes with all but one of the breed that I've personally known... the Black Lab is actually responsible for more bites then any other breed of medium dog & German Shepards for by far the most serious bites from large dogs... the overall bite champ is the Cocker-Spanial but to me ankle-biters don't count.

Every pit i've owned has been full of energy. As for the barking. Pit's don't usually bark that much until they get older. Looks like you have a lot of doubts in your mind about his/her condition. I would take him/her to the vet as soon as you get an opportunity. Small problems can turn into big problems.

whats with the hate against pitbulls? not all pitbulls are the same. tyler i agree with you on that they shouldnt be chained or locked. any dog can become aggressive under those conditions. so it depends on how the dog is raised, whether itll be aggressive or not. OP, hmm it sounds like she may be sick cuz most dogs, at that age, are very energetic and playful. id take her to the vet if i were you. hope everything goes well. good luck!

say what? What does that have to do with anything? He's right. Any dog that is chained or locked up can become aggressive..pitbull or not.

That said, ANY dog has the ability to become aggresive and dangerous. People forget one simple things. Dogs are carnivorous pack animals. Centuries of breeding and domesticating them has done quite alot to bury that trait but it is a trait that still exists and will always exist deep within the dog. It is a carnivorous pack animal that hunts.

If you read my post, you'll note a couple points which arn't my opinion at all, but are based on the real statistics & the opinions of the American Kennel club, not media hype... I own a big German Shepard & they are the most likely dog to attack & do serious damage to somone, not a Pit-bull... a well trained pure bred Pit Bull makes a great pet contrary to popular belief, the problem is the (admittedly many) irresponsible owners who encourage
or even train their dogs to be aggressive & amatuer breeders which either inbreed the dogs until they become unstable or breed them with other aggressive types.

Btw, its interesting to note that ALL dogs regardless of breed are genetically almost identical to the wolf, so that part of what you said is correct.

It still comes down to the owner. I've had several dogs that were deemed by the public to be dangerous. Two of which were actually my sisters' dogs. One was a brindle and the other a chow/pit mix. Both were great family dogs but her boyfriend played really rough with them thus causing them to be mean. Then when my ex-girfriend and I were together we ended up purchasing a Rotty named Blaze. He was great. Great with people, kids, and other animals as well.

The reason why pitbull attacks in general are more severe is due to their lockjaw. When they bite, they latch on.

Chained doesn't work. My dad had a pit bull that was chained up. One of the neighbor kids decided they would step on our lawn - the pit bull BROKE a link of chain and took after him...luckily my dad was there to call him off. As far as the dog was concerned he was just protecting his property. They are very aggressive...even when you think that they are nice to all people it isn't always true.

Pit Bulls don't have locking jaws... thats a myth... they also don't even have nearly the hardest bite of dogs commonly though of as aggressive, that honor goes to the Rottweiler
which can apply over 150lbs bite pressure as opposed to a pure pit bull which max's out around 100lbs.
Rotts are another dog with a reputation for being aggressive that simply isn't real, they are also great pets (as you know) & are highly recomended for familys by the same American kennel club.
