Heard on the radio today..Chicago

2 Pitbulls attacked a Grandmother and her grandchild. A neighbor retreived a handgun and saved their lives by killing one dog and driving off the other. Handguns are illegal in Chicago! The newscast wasn't clear if the 'Hero' was arrested....

As a former veterinary technician, I have one thing to say:

Pit Bulls, although not inherently 'bad', are not good family pets. Neither are Chows or Rottweilers. There are laws concerning the ownership of them in other countries. Sure, some INDIVIDUALS may have made good pets, but as breeds, they are not tolerant of children. I think the dog owners should be taken to task. It isn't too hard to learn about the inbred personality traits of certain animals.

I would have controlled the dogs without use of a gun, but I have training. (handgun unecessary)

Edit: Just to make it perfectly clear, since I am not in Kansas anymore.... What I am saying here is regardless of the means used to stop the dogs, THE OWNERS ARE RESPONSIBLE. There really isn't anything else for the authorities to consider, and if they do, then we really are in bad shape. The hand gun issue is a shame. What's the matter with you people in Chicago? Down South we all got guns! :D)

Hmmm I had alway read that Rottweilers were one of the better family dogs as for chows and pitbulls I agree.

Rotties are a mixed bag.

I have seen very sweet ones, but you MUST know the lineage! A pet store Rott is a no-no.

I don't believe there are such things as 'bad dogs' in the sense that they are inherently dangerous. Dogs can be bred and raised to be dangerous, or mistreated. A dog treated properly is a good dog.

The (excellent) point Tominator was making was that here's a good example of how a handgun saved two people's lives. More than likely, the media will not show this far and wide, because it would go against Rosie's campaign to villify handguns.

And yeah, Tominator, I would not be surprised if the owner of the gun was indeed arrested for possesion of a firearm. Of course, the media would also not jump on that either, because it doesn't fit the agenda either.

The best dogs are Anatolian Shepherds.

And I have to agree with Isla, Chows and Rotts don't really make the best family dogs. Although I've only had good experiences with them, they just don't really have the best personality traits to have around a family.

German Shepherds are good dogs. Not #1 with children, at least not small children, but very, very good overall.

I like Dobies myself. :)

Eventually I would like to have an Anatolian Shepherd, Great Dane, or Doberman.
Although, Dobermans are almost a little small for me ;)

I agree with Isla (as a former vet tech too :)), Doberman's are great dogs! The only other dog that I think could be a sweeter pet is an adopted greyhound. The vets I worked with owned three, and recommended them to anyone who came in looking for a dog. After running for a career, it seems all they want to do is sleeeeep! :) They're great with children and other pets too...

Personally, I have a German Shepherd/Chow mix, and she is the sweetest, smartest dog I've ever had...but she must be an exception to the rule. I've never seen a friendly chow before. My uncle has one and my granparent's neighbors have one. Both two of the meanest animals I've ever met in my life. The only reason we kept the dog we have now was because when we got it, it was so little we thought it was entirely Shepherd...but then we noticed the black spot on her tongue and the curly tail and the dark dark eyes, and you could tell she has chow in her. She makes a great watchdog though! Man does she love to bark!!!

Oh, and if it came down to it, snap snap...I would've put those dogs down too, without a gun. :(
I always hate to read about dog attacks...my cousin was attacked by a Rottweiler when he was two...ripped off half his scalp. To this day he is frightened of all dogs..it can be a very traumatic experience.

Tominator/tajel, et al

Sorry if my intial post (which did address the handgun issue) led the others astray. I went back and highlighted what was on track and deleted what may have been distracting. In my defense (and everyone else's) the title "Pit Bulls... is not as clear as perhaps "The Handgun Laws In Chicago". Change the title and you will get more people who want to debate gun laws, less who want to talk about dogs. ;)

What I was trying to say was that the handgun shouldn't be an issue, the dog's owers should be the focus of this legally.

Where I live, there isn't any question about it. The owners would be heavily fined, too. Shoot the dang dogs... I wouldn't need a gun to stop them, but my mother would... most people would.

Edit: oh, and tajel.... some dogs are bred to be more aggressive. Just inbred traits chosen by the breeders. Not the dogs fault, and not 'bad'.... people need to be AWARE of the general traits of the dogs they choose to take into their homes. The owners are ultimately responsible. Guns or not.... dogs are just as lethal.

JellyBaby heres my dirty white shepard Nikita.

Nikita

Nikita again

I wouldn't say she is exaclty friendly though. She is a bit timid and really doesn't like the kids next door. They run around all day right around our fence and I think it pisses her off. We also have a great dane that is dumb as a rock but really friendly and I think a bearded collie that just lays around the house all day.

Hey Isla - Just curious... How do you stop two crazy pit bulls without a gun or anything? I would think you'd lose a hand. :Q

pit bulls suck! Just the other day in my neighbor hood one Pitbull killed another one. These dogs need to be re breed and re trained. There just plain F-ed up in da head...

I own a boxer and he is the most gentle dog. He jumps around alot but never the less he is still sweet. He is very very hyper though evan at the age of 2 years old. Just my .02 cents

Why is it pit bull owners all try to act tough? As if the dog is their weapon? I am not Prejudice but I think it?s mostly the minority?s that own them, that and the un-educated folks.

EDIT: I am not saying that if you own a pitbull you are stupid!!

Getting a bit extreme there. Where I grew up alot of people just let their dogs run free and there were a few pitbulls running around that were nice as could be but they weren't owned by 14-30 year old males trying to look cool/tough. I think its partly the dog and mostly the owner.

I own Rotties and they are well trained. They have won just about every class they have been in and have done real well in Flyball and Agility. I would still not recommend them for households with very small children. Rotties act like very large puppies and just their playing can hurt children.

My mom spent 6 weeks on crutches because the two dogs were playing and didn't watch where they were going and blew out her knee. Never even slowed down the dogs :)

Isla, no problem, dogs are just as interesting to talk about. My personal favorite is the Siberian Husky, of which I had two some time ago. They are the most mellow family-friendly dog you'll ever find, sweet as can be, even though they look like wolves.
