The dogs were described as "sweethearts," by one neighbor but not everyone remembered them as particularly friendly.

Asked about the dogs' behavior, 13-year-old neighbor Aaron Vinnick said: "Sometimes nice, sometimes mean."

The incident has shaken dog owners in San Francisco. Campbell said that several people arrived at Animal Care and Control on Saturday to drop off their pit bulls.

"What happens is that people start thinking about their liability and safety," Campbell said. "The pit bulls that killed the boy were described as friendly and people start looking at their friendly dog and asking if it could do the same thing."

Both dogs, pets of the boy's family, were examined by veterinarian Dr. Bing Dilts and a police forensic expert, according to Deb Campbell, a spokeswoman for Animal Care and Control.

what a name.

..blows the theory that only poorly raised pit's are a hazard. These dogs were described as "sweethearts" but turned into land sharks anyway. I live here in sf on the daily city border..ksfo discussion talked about the breeding characteristics observed by SPCA and Humane Society org's..only the most aggressive of pit's have been encouraged to breed over the last 20 years resulting in many strains of super aggressive pit's that are truely a hazard for the owner..and any living creature around them. Plus the huge litigation hazard pit's have become. The last time I renewed my home owners ins.I had to indicate if I had a dog and what breed.

The solution here in Ontario, Canada was to simply ban the breed.

I would never own one of these dogs either. You don't hear much about other types of dogs mauling kids or other people. These dogs are ticking time bombs keeping them in the house.

Wow that neighborhood has a lot of pits. I usually don't go for dogs like pits and rottweilers (sp?) and I guess I have a reason now. Scary stuff.

One of my relatives owns a pit bull...Pretty nice dog as far as I know...

They've had it since their kid was ~3? maybe. If it was up to me though, I'd get that dog out of there since the kid (now 6 or so) hits and kicks the dog all the time and thinks it's funny :Q

not good to do to a Pit :Q

Oh great, now all the idiots are going to crawl out of the woodwork saying that a dog is as good as its training, disregarding the fact that dog breeds are known have varying aggressiveness along with all other behavioural attributes.

The shelter accepted the dogs and will perform an "aggression assessment" to determine whether a dog poses a safety hazard. If the dog passes, the dog is put up for adoption. If it does not, it is destroyed.

lol, destroyed.. arent they usually put to sleep? destroyed? lol...
anyways, its so tough to tell w/ pitbulls.. a good friend of mine just got 4 puppy pitbulls (all female).. they're like my favorite dogs in the world, but they're still just puppies..
he plans on breeding them, good money in it.. but i dont know if its worth the risk of having those four grown dogs in the house... at least hes a single guy with no kids living with him... (hes got a 1 yr old daughter but she lives with her mother)...

not that i don't think pit bulls are dangerous, but the article did say:

Blood was found on Rex's fur, but Campbell declined to disclose any other details. Authorities are still uncertain if both dogs attacked the boy. More tests are scheduled for Monday.

i don't think we can jump to the conclusion that the dogs did it based on what little information we have. for all we know, he was killed by a human, and the dogs just happened to get some blood on them.

I don't trust the Humane Society with their tests. They said my dog was vicious, but he's very friendly and never exhibbited any vicious or dangerous behavior.

yeah i don't get why people with kids own pitbulls. there are so many other breeds of dogs out there.

its stupid not to buy a breed that would fit your lifestyle.

People are idiots.

1st rule is own a dog you can control, and if the only people at home with it at any given time cannot handle it, keep it locked in a cage.

People that usually buy pitbulls are the type of people that want one because of the rep they have.

Not very often you'll see a sweet 85 year old grandma and grandpa taking their pitbull out for a walk.
