they really need to license people to be able to have kids

You do realize 99% of these deadbeat parents don't PLAN to have kids, but their kids are a result of some cracked up, drunken night of... I don't know what.

BOSSIER CITY, La. ? A pit bull puppy chewed off four of a baby girl's toes while the child's parents slept, police here said Monday. The parents were booked on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and were being held in the Bossier Parish Jail pending an initial court appearance.

Police said the parents were sleeping on a mattress in the living room of their residence and the month-old girl was in an infant seat beside them when the puppy began chewing on their baby's toes.

Mary Shannon Hansche, 22, and Christopher Wayne Hansche, 26, told police they woke up to the sound of the baby crying, found her mangled foot and took her to the hospital about 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

"They did not see the dog injuring the child," police spokesman Mark Natale said.

The girl underwent surgery Sunday at Sutton's Children's Hospital in Shreveport. There was no way to reattach the child's toes, Natale said Monday.

The puppy was 6 weeks old and had no record of receiving its shots and will be quarantined for 10 days to check for rabies. Natale said he did not know what the puppy's fate would be after that.

Why were the parents charged w/anything?

sounds like they did the right things? woke up to child crying, saw the damage and took her to the hospital.

what am i missing?

i don't believe the puppy did it. They would have heard the baby crying long before 4 toes were chewed off. I think they dropped acid and chewed the toes themselves, or did it to punish the baby for crying or something.

And no Dog crate. Really they aren't that much money.

This is why pit bulls have a bad rep, HUMAN trash buy them because they think it makes them cool and tough but don't bother training the dog.

But I know in an hour this will be a "OMG WTF PIT BULLS MUST DIE!!!!!111!" thread.

fixed

Another veterinarian, Dr. Valri Brown, said if the puppy chewed off the infant's toes, it would not have happened quickly. "It would have to be a period of time ? maybe at least an hour," she said.

That is part of the problem. You can't tell me the kid wasn't screaming the entire time..

Maybe the puppy damaged some nerves on the first bite so the kid didnt wake up 🙂

I agree the parents are probably to blame, but the amount of info given to us by the article wasn't enough to damn them.

They must have been zonked for some reason, or lying about being near the baby.... at the very least they were negligent in the placement of the puppy and baby.

Am I wrong for caring more about what's gonna happen to the dog, than the kid? 🙁

No, because the baby will recover but the puppy might be killed. I'd say this was extremely traumatic for the baby, but since people seem to believe that babies don't feel the pain of circumcision, logic would dictate that they don't feel the pain of having toes chewed off by a dog.

That pup is already eating babies. What is it going to be when it grows up?
That dog has to go.

While I agree that the animal should be put down, it really isnt to blame here in any way, and it has nothing to do with the fact that it is a pitt bull.
denial isn't just a river in Egypt.

I really do think this says something about the breed.

You can't say pitbulls are raised to be mean or not when their basic instincts as puppies is to eat children.

Golden retriever puppies and kittens lack the baby consuming instinct pitt bulls apparently have.

I don't know why everybody is trashing parents. Why does everybody assume that they were drunk/drugged/lived in a trailer before knowing all the facts? The article doesn't say much, as far as we know it might have been a normal family. I may as well just assume that they didn't have money for crib? So essentially they are sent to jail for not having money to buy crib?

While it's an unfortunate incident, I wouldn't be too fast to blame the parents. Wait till all the facts are there.

No, for being too stupid.
