ANY DOG which has been mistreated is capable of biting and attacking someone.

True, but not all dogs are capable of taking down a human. If a rabid tiny dog came after you, you could simply kick it.

People that own mistreated vicious Pitbulls should be kenneled and poked with a stick 24/7. I hope they convict this waste of human life and find a caring loving home for the pit bull.

They never do that, they always put the "dangerous" dog to death. They swear they are saving the dog(s) by killing them.

and they give their owners a slap on the wrist...

This is why I hope he is convicted so it will set a precedence.

pit bulls give pit bulls a bad name, if you asked a lab or a golden retreiver to go and attack a woman it would probably look at you and into a corner of a room and goto sleep.

Similarly, there's a reason they were named 'pit bulls'. Just like 'golden retrievers' are named such for a reason. Golden Retrievers are awesome dogs. Worst they'll do is lick you to death. 🙂

I have a mutt that's part pit bull. She is the most gentle dog you'll ever meet with humans, but she won't hesitate to attack another dog that shows the slightest bit of aggression around her.

It goes back to their history. They were bred for dogfighting, mainly in the 1800s. Dogs that were very "game" (would fight to the death) were bred; dogs without that trait were killed. Any dogs that were aggressive toward their owner (and often other people) were killed. As a result, their natural instinct is to hate dogs but like people.

I love her to death, and I agree the problem is with people who raise them wrong, but I'm not so sure a ban would be such a bad thing. Or perhaps a licensing thing where obedience training is required. And this comes from a libertarian.

yup, to deny theres a difference between dog breeds that HUMANS have bred for their differences is just plain stupid. if a chiwawa attacks you, at most you get some cuts. if a pit bull attacks you or a kid.. mauling or death. doesn't matter if they are trained as attack dogs or beaten or not. some just are not right in the head. they are not widgets you make at a factory with some kind of scientific quality control. its an animal, unpredictable and esp dangerously unpredictable with pitbulls.

Owning a pit bull is like giving a loaded shotgun to a three-year-old kid and telling him to point it at everyone he sees.

Yes, I'm sure. But why is it that I hear and read about pitbull attacks 1000x more than other types of dogs?
Because most people that get them are macho retards who

a) Won't neuter them.

b) Don't know how to train/handle that kind of dog. Pits will assert themselves as the alpha unless you know what you're doing (as will other breeds).

My take on this- the pit bull was a weapon. Destroy the weapon and room the guy with Bubba on aggravated assault, attempted murder, and egregious stupidity charges.

Dogs in and of themselves are not dangerous as a rule. It's the owners that make them bad!
My dog is 1/4 Pitt bull, 1/4 Rottweiler and 1/2 Chesapeake Bay Retriever and a more gentle dog you are not likely to meet. Ask anyone who's met Brutus, he's a sweetheart!

who is now going to kick yer ass for calling him "sweetheart"..

😛

Ask "anyone"? 😉

Yah. Pits can be great dogs but you need to be able to train them. But this goes for a lot of dogs. And actually, the dog that causes the most human deaths is the Rottweiler.

If you don't know how to train a dog, bet a Golden Retriver.

I worked for a vet for a few years and guess which breed of dog I had the most problems with?

Miniature dachshunds. No, I'm not kidding.

that is terrible. the woman is probably ruined for life (her nose was bitten off) if she survives.
I vote for a ban on all pitbulls.

Ya you can train a pit bull so that it's a tame dog but the reason people buy pit bulls is because they want to use it for other reasons-...Not to have a friendly dog...
Golden Retrievers can actually be pretty nasty...I know of a couple....
German Shepards can be trained to be mean but not everyone buys them to use as a guard dog...some people buy them because they look cool and are intelligent...hence why I have mine.
On the other hand- pit bulls are generally bought because people think of them as bad a$$ fighters and have little dik syndrome... Notice I said generally because not everyone buys them for that- but the vast majority do...
Rottweilers are much like German Shepards in that they're fairly intelligent and are a good looking breed that the majority dont use for illegitimate reasons like guarding dope...

It's real easy to say "Pit Bulls just need to be trained well, and then they are not dangerous". The fact of the matter is, most of the time when you see an American Pit Bull Terrier, it's dragging some moron up the street who bought it because it would scare everyone, and his buddies would all think he was cool. This dog likely has not had even the most rudimentary training other than a broomstick to it's butt. Rather, it's been teased and provoked so that it'll be mean and nasty.

The world isn't full of fully trained, well-adjusted APBT's with competent handlers.

Pit Bulls should be banned in cities, not because of the dogs themselves, but because of the idiots who own them. At the very least, you should have to go through training and become certified (much like a gun owner), before you can own an APBT, and the Pit Bull should also have to pass obedience and agitation tests as well.

Edit- I'll qualify this post. I have a German Sheppard. He's 2 and a half now. At 6 months of age, I could not control him. He would pull me up the street, and when we saw another dog, he would go completely ballistic. I'd have to carry him across the street while he was biting my arm the whole time so I'd let him go eat the dog. He'd suddenly decide some person was a threat to us, and try to attack them.
I took him to obedience class, and in just a few months, the difference was absolutely unbelievable. 2 years later, I can put him Down in the middle of a park full of yapping dogs running all around, walk away, and he'll still be there 10 minutes later, having never took his eyes off of me. Train your dogs!

Wish I had read your post before I bothered with mine....EXACTLY....

Having worked with a vet, you should feel a pang of terror at this as well:

"Lhasa Apso" and "Housefull of kids."
