My guess is some idiot clicked a link in a suspicious email that set loose malware that encrypts data on connected devices. I've seen it happen in a corporate environment where people ought to know better, and have "annual training" on the subject.

Training won't help. The vast majority of them will still be as "here's your sign" stupid after the training as before. Especially the lowest paid of them.

The person who clicked the link was probably somebody higher up in upper level management anyway. Those people are often the worst of the worst, as they have an oversized sense of entitlement that leads them to demand higher system access rights than they actually need to do their jobs.

I wish I could legitimately refute any part of your statement, buuuuut... I can't.

Just talked to my brother in northern VA. Costco didn't have any unusual lines. No problem filling up.

I guess I'm confused. Kemp's dropping the gas tax. So he want's everyone to run out and buy all the non-tax they can get their hands on?. And that solves the demand problems how. I thought cons were capitalists.
Or look at it this way, tax payers subsidizing the gouging?

Drove from N VA to Tallahassee, FL yesterday. Filled up twice. Got a station with regular gas on the first try both times. No waiting. Both times there were stations that had no gas or limited grades of gas but right next to them were stations with gas. Prices had not been jacked up tremendously at least not where we bought. Did see some signs for gas over $3 for regular, but we paid $2.89 and $2.71. We paid $2.60 and $2.70 on the way up (pre pipeline problem) , but not the same stations or even same states necessarily.

I had been prepared for a much worse experience and was grateful it didn't happen.

That's why I go there on the way in to work at 7:30 line free!
When I was still working, and they used to be open at 6:30 am, I would buy gas there. Then they put in all these nice new pumps, lanes, and all with diesel. Then they changed their hours to start at 7:00 am, so that no longer worked. Now I don't have that problem, but it's really hit or miss on how busy up until about noon, then it always 8 full lines.

Neither my Sam's nor Costco have diesel.:(

I do like the Sam's QR code payment at the pump. Quick and I don't have to dig out cards out of my wallet.

And we have even more hacking from Russia, and or from China. Our pipelines, our meat production, and I thought America was on top of this cyber crap? I thought America had the better cyber securities at their disposal? Apparently not. And I realize a lot of this involves the business level of cyber security, and are the businesses doing enough to protect themselves? Are they willing to spend the money to protect themselves? Obviously the answer is no they are not. Too cheap? Think it can't happen to them, like with Covid?

Well, what I want to know is, why not fight fire with fire? If America is going to be cyber attacked, then we should cyber attack back. Turn the lights out in the Kremlin. Put those lights out in Moscow. Shut down their pipe lines and their food supplies. Remember the nuclear race where every side having the same capability was the best deterrent from attack? Now is not the time to be shy. America needs to impose the ultimate deterrent, retaliation. They can shut us down and we can shut them down, and in the end no one wants to be shut down and so no one will be.

You can try to scare business into spending the money on cyber security protections, which they won't do due to the cost, or you can put the US government in charge, which a republican congress will never agree to, or.... retaliate. The only deterrent that a bully understands is a smack in the face. No reasoning, not pleading, not handing over your lunch money, but a good old fashion fist in the face. Joe, roll up your sleeves, put on those boxing gloves, and hit Putin right in his good old electrical gird. o_O (ouch)

Colonial pipeline that serves the SE announced they were shutting down due to the hurricane hitting NO.

Let the fucking panic ensue, panic gas purchases, filling up everything, and stations out of gas is as little as 8 hours here.

24 hours later, the announcement that the pipeline has resumed normal operations.

Arrrrrrrrrrgg... stupid people

Yeah, somehow this "news" spread like wildfire on NC Facebook pages on Sunday and my wife suggested I fill up the car. I waited, checked a few spot prices and futures on Monday and told her "Nope, not happening this time". Meanwhile, crude continues to drop today...
